Spraying WD-40 into mufflers and jacking points under motor
« on: November 24, 2008, 06:24:15 PM »
I winterized my bike last weekend, if we look at the muffler end, there is the exhaust hole and also a small hole under it:  should I spray in both of them?

I also noticed 2 small wings under the engine (I am looking for the proper english word for them, in french, I would say protubérences):  are they jacking points for the whole bike?  I saw some jacks especially made for bikes, could it make cleaning and maintenance easier?

Raynald,

I'm not sure spraying WD in your mufflers is going to do much for them, but maybe someone else here can enlighten you.  The key is storing it in an area where there is as little humidity fluctuation as possible and allowing for good ventilation.......like your livingroom!

Those spots on the underside of the engine are not for jacking. The best place to lift from is the frame rails.

Thank you for the info:  what do you mean by "rails"?

The two black tubes that run either side of the oil pan. Aka: Frame tubes.

IMO there isn't really a good place to lift under this bike  ::) but the tubes/rails are the safest, strongest place(s) to lift.

Matt,

thank you for the info!

I suppose, I would have to put some wood blocks under those tubes to protect the oil pan during jacking.

Anyone have photos, suggestions about jacks for motorcycles?

I believe spraying fogging oil into all the mufflers is a very cheap and good idea. I have been doing it for years. Dan

Keep in mind WD40 is more of a solvent than an oil.  I like the idea of fogging fluid and have never tried it.  Maybe Liquid Wrench would be better.  I just rolled my KO into the heat patio for winter cleaning and detailing...and piece of mind.

Hmmmm. I think the best place to store your bike over the winter is Definitely the kitchen! Always warm and dry in there.
Gives me an idea, I wonder other members of this forum store their bikes over the winter?

I feel a poll coming on :D

Never gets cold enough here in Hawke's Bay but as there are now 4 bikes in the shed they can cuddle for heat. ;D
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

We would love a picture of that scene. Idea for a Christmascard? Some artificial snow maybe...
