It has happened before. They get people riled up and standing in the cold all night. They get the herd mentality like a riot and go apesh1t for a few bucks off. I went to store that had people camping outside. By 11 I walked right in and they brought out additional stock. The stores were empty. It is a crying shame a man died for some BS hype.

This happened because too many people these days are f#cking stupid. I mean really. They killed a person to save a couple bucks. What a shame.  >:(

It's mob murder and these folks should have been arrested and tried.
Also, those who witnessed it and kept on getting it should be tried for
neglect to give aid. This is why I care so little for people in herds,
they show as much intelligence as a herd of cattle.

Of course the police don't do anything that counts so I've heard of no arrest.

It's the worst side of a consumer economy.  What a tragedy.

I don't understand the people standing out there waiting all night to get in.  I also don't understand the store's desire to create an atmosphere like this.

The Seattle Times speaks about it clearly,

Quote
"It was mainly only discount chains that were bustling long before sunrise. People showed up for a small number of limited-time "door-buster" deals, such as 32-inch flat-screen televisions for $388 and Intel laptops for $499. In many cases, after an initial onslaught, crowds dwindled after the few sought-after items had sold out."

These "door buster" deals encourage this desperate behavior to get the retailer extra attention.

I hate to chime on the retail bashing (and defend it) as I worked in retail for better than a decade in high school, college, & 1st job, and I have witnessed Black Friday for several years, BUT someone said it best earlier "herd mentality."  This is not a retail phenomena, this is herd mentality at it's finest.  Think of some kids getting crushed at a concert

the article also said that as the EMS people were on the ground trying to work on the trampled employee......customers were still barging in, around, and on them trying to get in the store before they shut it down for the investigation....surely with all the cameras these stores have, the people could be identified that did this.....well, at least the ones that initially knocked him down.......to the peopl in the back of the herd, unfortunately by that time, the employee was nothing more than a speed bump.......he wasn't even a real wal mart employee if I remember the article.....he was from a temp agency.........so probly no benefits or life insurance for people he left behind.......it's a #$%*ed up world we live in....................................

Truly a crying shame. :'( Sure, those people who busted in are directly responsible for that employee's death, but I  say that the stores (No matter what store it is) should be held responsible also. After all, the helped create the situation. People just seem to get so STUPID at times like that. When I see that there is going to be a sale that is incredible, my 1st thoughts are, "That Place Is Going To Be Packed and Parking is going to be Crazy! :o I may miss out on some Super Sales, but I Also don't get in on the pushing, shoving and utter Frustration that will obviously occur!

My heart does go out to the family and friends of that one who died. :(

Is "herd mentality" or "mob mentality" any different from "gang mentality"?

Packs of people are like packs of Dogs. Some odd phenomenon happens. That is why in riot training they break people into smaller groups. One would hope we would have evolved beyond that, I guess not. Poor bastard was probably trying to get a few bucks together for the Holidays.
I walked into a Walmart today bought a TV for the same price as advertised yesterday and I was in an out in less than 30 minutes. No crowds.

"Herd Mentality", Mob Mentality", call it whatever you like, it's more and more prevalent in today's society that people are so focused on their own needs, that they often ignore common sense and common decency to achieve their own aims.

I was driving down the freeway just before Christmas '04 in the rain when I saw an auto accident unfolding ahead, a girl had spun her Mazda out on the on-ramp, flew down the grassy verge, and across traffic doing 60 MPH at right angles to the flow of traffic, colliding with three cars. (three lane freeway)

I rang 000 (911) and ran over to see if I could help. No-one was seriously injured, but there were 4 disabled cars with about 6 or 7 people wandering around dazed and confused. The fire truck arrived first, then the ambulance, and finally the cops arrived a good 10 minutes after everyone else.

In the meantime, one other driver who'd stopped, backed his car up 50 yards or so with his hazard lights on to warn oncoming traffic even though the crash was clearly visible from 1/4 of a mile away, but what blew me away was the morons not even slowing down, and swerving around his car, and the disabled vehicles and their drivers.

All we could do was move everybody off the road and wait for the emergency services to arrive. Even with the fire truck and ambulance crews there, these turkeys weren't slowing down, and it wasn't until the cops arrived that cars actually stopped.

Luckily it was a Sunday afternoon and traffic wasn't too heavy, or else it would have been a nightmare. It really surprised me, but I guess I'm just getting old...........  :P

Another story of barbarism:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Witnesses: Fatal shooting followed toy store brawl

By GILLIAN FLACCUS, Associated Press Writer Gillian Flaccus, Associated Press Writer – 1 hr 45 mins ago

PALM DESERT, Calif. – The shooting occurred in a crowded toy store on the traditional start of the holiday shopping season, but authorities say it wasn't related to the bargain-hunting frenzy. Instead, two men pulled guns and killed each other after the women with them erupted into a bloody brawl, witnesses said.

Authorities released few details about the mayhem that broke out at the Toys "R" Us store around 11:30 a.m. Friday, sending scared shoppers fleeing. Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Dennis Gutierrez said the fight was not over a toy and that handguns were found by the men's bodies. He refused to say whether the shooting was gang-related.

The victims were identified as Alejandro Moreno, 39, of Desert Hot Springs, and Juan Meza, 28, of Cathedral City. No one else was hurt.

Witnesses Scott and Joan Barrick said they were checking out of the store when the brawl began between two women, each with a man. The women were near the checkout area, but the Barricks did not think the women had purchases.

One woman suddenly started punching the other woman, who fought back as blood flowed from her nose, said Scott Barrick, 41. The man who was with the woman being punched pulled a gun halfway out of his pocket, then shoved it back in, he said.

"He pulled his gun right next to me. I turned to look for my wife, and she was already hiding," Scott Barrick said.

"I was scared," said Joan Barrick, 40. "I didn't want to die today. I really didn't want to die today, and I think that's what we were all thinking."

The other man pulled a gun and pointed it at the first man but forgot to cock it, Scott Barrick said. The first man tried to run but was blocked by the line of people, then ran back toward the store's electronics section as the other man fired his gun, he said.

The first man reached a dead-end in electronics, turned around and ran toward an exit, pulling his gun and firing back, Scott Barrick said.

"He went up to the cash register, he went to put his hand on the thing and he just went phoomp," he said, indicating the man fell.

He said he did not see what happened to the other man.

Palm Desert Councilman Jim Ferguson said police told him two men with handguns shot and killed each other.

"I think the obvious question everyone has is who takes loaded weapons into a Toys "R" Us?" he said. "I doubt it was the casual holiday shopper."

Ray Turner, 20, said he was two aisles away when two women began shouting and screaming at each other and he had a clear view of the fight until a crowd clustered around them. Both women had children, he said.

"We thought it was just a fight and then someone yelled: `He's got a gun! He's got a gun!' You really couldn't see nothing because there was a crowd," Turner said.

Rafael Gomez, 11, said he and his father had been in the store about 20 minutes before the shooting but were in a nearby Pizza Hut when they saw people pouring out of the store screaming.

"We just saw them running and crying. I was kind of scared," Rafael said. "We got lucky."

Toys "R" Us issued a statement expressing outrage over the violence.

"We are working closely with local law enforcement officials to determine the specific details of what occurred," the statement said. "Our understanding is that this act seems to have been the result of a personal dispute between the individuals involved. Therefore, it would be inaccurate to associate the events of today with Black Friday."

Palm Desert is a resort town about 120 miles east of Los Angeles.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You should all take very careful note of this story. These Walmart "choppers" would kill you over an xBox or a flat screen TV. Think what they would be capable of it they were hungry, or didn't have gas for their cars, or heat for their hovels.

The US is now on the verge of a financial calamity that no one has seen since the days of the Great Depression. There is a real possibility, that in the very near future, the Walmart crowd will not have enough food to eat, or heat for their cribs.

Better stock up on ammo while you can, you'll need it for all the squishy targets.

lets think about this logically for one second... not saying it couldn't have been helped... but consider this...

you're the first guy in line for a cheap ass tv.  you're getting pressed up against the doors like you never thought was possible.  some poor employee gets the short straw and must go open the doors.  you end up being the ONE that tramples the guy to death in your own desperate attempt to flee the pressing herd.  do not pass go, head straight to jail!

lets just be careful who we place blame on to... just because you're in the herd, does not mean you trampled a person, the herd trampled the person.

in '93 there was a flood in my hometown in kansas.  i could blame the water for the damage but i know that i would be wrong... the damage was a direct result of the corp of engineers being lackadaisical on their approach to flood control.  they watched the water behind the spillway get higher and higher and even higher still.  they would not open the gates because they did not want to worsen the already ravaging floods south of kansas.  finally, when the water came w/in inches of cresting the spillway gates, they were opened in order to retain control of the flow of water rather than simply having no control of it by letting it overflow. what the corp of engineers did do correctly was not open the gates fully... if that had happened i'm not sure there would have been anything left of our house... instead, they controlled the flow as best they could.  the flood still destroyed many parts of the spillway channel and dug 50-60 foot craters in a matter of hours.  i hate to imagine what could have happened if the gates were fully opened.

i'm not saying walmart should only slightly opened the doors, that would be silly... but they could go outside before the doors are opened... and give numbers to everyone in line.  (just one idea plucked from thousands) if you don't get a number, you're sh!t outa luck!  the problem so far is that there is no damage control for these situations, herd control, flood control... whatever you would like to call it.

walmart is solely to blame, in my opinion...
