Topic: Is there a front disc surfacer in DFW?

Looks like I need to have this disc resurfaced.  Anyone now where I can take the disc in the DFW area to get surfaced correctly?

In the meantime, can I surface it myself.  Yanno, like with sand paper or steel wool or something like that?

I know there is a guy on ebay that does it but I would rather carry it there and pick it up.

Any good machine shop should be able to mill the surface.

I've done the sandpaper trick and put a nice scuff on all my discs at some point.  Works REAL well, and is a nice "poor man's turning".

Make sure that you spray it down super-good with brake cleaner afterwards to wash all the sand off.

Like the man (the EBay man) says, you can't fix a slightly warped or grooved sohc4 disc unless you've got a surface grinder. Sandpaper is fine for "deglazing" your discs, but that's about it.

Due to the heat generated by spirited braking from speed, the discs (already very bloody hard stainless steel) become case hardened stainless steel, and are just about impossible to machine with cutting tools on a lathe or mill. I know, I've tried............

Looking at the EBay pic of the rotary surface grinder though, I've just realized that provided you could buy a suitable stone, it wouldn't be too difficult to grind your own discs on a mill/drill with a rotary table, or with a little "home grown ingenuity", even a cheap pedestal drill.

Main thing would be to use plenty of coolant to keep the stone cool, and sharp. Hmmmnnn, I might give it a try on the weekend!

My CB500 stops much more slowly than my CB350.  I know that the 350 is lighter but the difference is dramatic.  The disk on the 500 is highly polished while the 350 disk has the normal non-reflective surface.  What grit of carbide cloth should I use to dress the shiny disk?

the photo in the e-bay link looks like a flywheel grinder. most machine shops and even "better" auto parts stores (usually not csk, auto-zone, air freshener and floor mat type stores) will have them. if you have a good relationship with a local repair facility maybe even ask them where they have a flywheel surfaced. (and if they say it isn't necessary to have it surfaced, hang up immediately and find another shop to have your work done at.) i'm not in dfw, but i can't imagine it would be hard to find someone.

too hard, you wont be able to mill it without making it too thin, has to be ground.
 I've had some success with solid 'pads' with emery discs stuck to them.
They actually make something for automotive rotor resurfacing which led me to try it (you need to make 'pad' with straight edge across disc though, the round ones with pivoting caliper take more from the middle otherwise)

working with the brake manufacturing reps i learned that they now recommend using good ol dish soap and water. it is the most effective at removing any "dust" and residue. i think partially because brake cleaner has been so diluted through environmental regulations and concerns, and also because, believe it or not, some brake cleaners will leave a residue, even though they are not supposed to. plus, most everyone should have some dish soap under the sink. -fwiw
   granted, most of this info comes from the automotive aftermarket, and may or may not directly apply to two wheeled machines, but may be it will help someone.
