Almost killed..
« on: December 01, 2008, 02:43:03 PM »
I almost got killed the other night.  It was dark and raining.  I decided I needed petrol so I pulled into the local petrol station & filled up.  I pulled out into the side road next to the station & stopped at the main road.  Only one car was coming.  I waited until it passed & then pulled out.  Something must've caught my eye because I slammed on the brakes & a car without its headlights on went past in front of me.  I wasn't on one of my bikes, I was in a big white Nissan van!  What has this got to do with SOHC's?  Well, I reckon I hit the brakes because of years of motorcycle riding experience.  Something clicked in my brain & my foot reacted instinctively.  So when people say that bikes are dangerous, I can say that riding them has saved my life..

Sure am glad that you realized you needed to stop! :o That's great that you managed to keep from being involved in an accident. :)
Sure makes you wonder where where that person's brains were! ::)

Sort of a similar thing happened to me last night as well...rainy, dark and coming down a twisty section of road known as Jamicaway in Boston...I was approaching traffic lights half-way down and as I got to them, they turned green...however I saw a car on the opposite side of the road wanting to turn left (coming across my lane) and I instinctively knew they would try and jump the light despite myself (VW Jetta) and very large SUV next to me going straight in forward motion (we hadnt stopped at the lights just rolling up to them).....sure enough (women driver) pulls in front of SUV, he brakes, I brake (and skid briefly) and she looks dumbflounded...I carry on...usual night in Boston....yes riding bikes here sharpens the reflexes  ;)

thanks for the story!

cheers
Andy

I guess I am lucky I did not drive last night. Glad you both made it.

The bike in the avatar is one of the new Morini's (9 1/2).

I'd sure like one!  It would be great to go out on it & have someone say "I remember the old Morini 3 1/2 Sport's", and I could say "Yep, got one of those too!"

Yeah if you drive enough I think you start to develop a sixth sense about things like that, it's maybe, that something is out of place, a vibration, a change in sound, I suppose even a smell, it's to bad it's not reliable.

A few days ago: a large 6 wheel pickup towing a 4 horse trailer, came barreling around the blind corner as I was pulling out of my driveway. Luckily  I stopped just in time for him to return to his own side of the road, as he was going 65MPH in a 40mph section.  Came within a foot of needing a new front end, for sure

As I pulled out behind him, 1/4 mile later I see several deer jumped right in front of his still speeding truck. He locked them up, and the trailer almost ended in the ditch. Must have scared the horses or driver as there were brown stripes on the road. ;D

If I had been on my bike I wouldn't be typing here, methinks.

The same thing nearly got me a while back, driving my white Z28 with foglights on. Black pickup pulled out of a church parking lot with no lights on! It was only the reflection of my fogs on the side or the truck that made me realize something was in the road. Thank God for over 40 years of biking sharpened reflexes.
