CB400F took a crap in Los Angeles
« on: December 03, 2008, 09:16:52 PM »
hey ya'll - just looking for some advice here.

So I Have been riding my CB400F around Los Angeles now for a few years with absolutely ZERO problems.  I have even taken it on a few short trips (a few hundred miles) with zero problems.   Two days ago, it just quit on me going up a hill.  No sputter, no missing at all - it had been running like a champ all day.  This leads me to think that its a coil or something.

I haven't time to even look at it till after Xmas, but is this something common for the 400?

thanks ya'lls.

Fuses.  Check your fuses.

Even if he LOOK good, a dirty fuse holder can cook the fuse innards.  Clean the holders and pinch them closed.  Make sure you have a clean and tight connection to the fuse.

15-amp fuses, don't leave home without some!

Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Won't be a coil.
As there are two coils, you would run on two cylinders if a coil failed.

If the whole lot quit (including lights) then it's probably fuse or switch, if the lights still work, it could be a kill switch short or ignition feed.

Happened to me the other day on my 750f.  In my case, the cold weather caused the plastic connector in the switch (which was already brittle with age) to crack and allow the connector to come off.  Though your switch is probably different...

+2 on checking that ignition switch, they are crap.
Bikes parked out front mean good chicken-fried steak inside.

As mentioned before, you should actually CHECK the fuses for continuity.... while they may LOOK good, but they're melted at the ends because the caps got too hot because of a poor connection, which results in heat, which results in fried (not blown) fuses.

+1 on the ignition switch, took my 550 out for a cruise a couple months back and it suddenly just died on me as i was going 75 down the highway. after fiddling with the key power would come back. Turns out one of the wires on the back of the ignition switch broke away. re-soldered it and good as new.

good luck!
