Peter Green Fleetwood Mac
« on: December 11, 2008, 04:19:55 PM »
I've been getting a bit of music here lately and thought I'd mention
Peter Green to y'all. He ain't dead yet either.

He started Fleetwood Mac and did some great songs. I came on to
Fleetwood Mac in the mid-70's so I missed out on Green then but
now I've found out quite a bit about him and his music. His Fleetwood Mac
had a uniqueness about them that was lost by the mid-70's.

Green went on a three day acid trip in late 69 (a trip he says he never came back from)
but he was diagnosed with schizophrenia in the early 70's. And he more or less dropped out
of music. But resurfaces occasionally, for a while with the Peter Green Splinter Group in the
late 90's.

Here's a video of Green's "Albatross"

of course I have to stick in "Oh Well"

Thanks for posting those.

Oh Well is one of my favorite songs to play.  The version on the "Then Play On" LP follows with a long acoustic guitar interlude, that I never played in total. (just my own interpretation).

Albatross is, well, just beautiful.  Check out "Underway", also.

If you like slide guitar, "Show Biz Blues" is also pretty fun.  It a pretty good solo song, as well.

I think I wore out the groves on the first LP I had.  I bought a second one to replace it.

I wondered why that song sounded familiar, Kottke did a cover of it with Mike Gordon on his Sixty-Six Steps album

You mean, beside my closet?  ;D

There are several stores in this area that sell LPs.  What is it you are looking for, and what kind of prices are you able to handle?

The first store that came to mind was:
http://www.thestore24.com/music/dcs.aspx?dcs=1&Format=LP+Vinyl

And, Streetlight Records in SJ.

I know I've been to others, too.  But, not in a couple years.

Be aware, if you want me to get them for you, they will be shipping from CA.

Hey, lets start with early Peter Green Fleetwood Mac.

How much for the LP Mr Breeze... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
I know, I don't have enough.

I'll have to tag along with the wife to local antique stores and I might
even find some that way.

We have a local store that deals in old blue grass LPs and 45's but no
rock/blues. Well they use to but now it looks like mostly CD's.
Anyone that wants me to check on something for them let me know.

Peter Green wrote and recorded Black Magic Woman in 1967 (I think it was),
I like his version as well as Santana's who took it to the charts with his
in 1970.

One of the neat technical tricks Mr. Green is known for coming up with, is flipping the polarity of one of the pickup magnets in his Les Paul to get a unique out of phase sound that was copied by quite a few folks in the day.
Thanks for posting the clips,
Ben

Is that Mick Fleetwood and John McVie on Albatross? Who are the other guitar players? I didn't know that tune, and really like it! Thanks again,
Ben

Yes, that is Mick and John.  The other guitarists are Danny Kirwan, and Jeremy Spencer.

see:

BTW the remaster of Fleetwood Mac, Live in Boston (the 1970 recording)  Is quite good as well.
I have V1 and V2 in MP3.  (And listening to it as I write this.)   ;D
The live version of Rattlesnake Shake is over 24 minutes long!

Also, the story I heard/read was that Peter Green wired his pickups out of phase accidentally.  But, liked the sound they made and decided to run with it.

I think I have a poster somewhere of a  concert circa '69 or '70 with Fleetwood Mac opening for Tim Harden. I took it off a lamp post in Harvard square. I wonder if it's the same concert you were referring to.

Cheers,

I heard the same just a bit different, something like it came wired out of phase from the factory and he liked it and left it as it was.
The pity is he sold that guitar during his troubled time and it belongs to a collector in Germany now I think.
