Jumping a starter with one post

On cars I take a screwdriver and touch the two posts of the starter together and make the engine turn over....How the heck do you do that on a motorcycle starter with only one positive terminal post???

I always thought we jumped the starter solenoid, not the starter when we did that. But on some car starters, I guess they are kinda together? Maybe this will help a little..

You could try maybe holding one screw driver on the positive post, another grounded against the starter case (ground), then cross them to touch to see what happens..

Yeah, I see what you mean.  I located the actual solenoid and tried to jump that....I think the starter on this bike I just picked up is bad.  When I jump the posts my voltage drops way down, like it would if the starter motor was turning, but it never turns.

Disconnect the lead to the starter cylinoid and touch the lead to the positive side of the battery you are using to jump the bike. Also make sure the baatery is grounded. Also you did not mention how old your battery is and you may need to just clean the starter and put new brushes in.
