without a speedometer?
« on: December 09, 2008, 06:50:29 PM »
does anyone ride without a speedometer and tach?
i have been trying to fit my headlight on my bike but have the wrong mounts.
doesn't fit with the ignition so i took off my gauges thinking about relocating my ignition switch.
anyhow i really like the look of my bike without the gauges and was wondering if it is legal to ride
without.

It's different in every state, here in Massachusetts you've gotta have a speedometer, check out your state's DOT or DMV website.  But yes, the look of these bikes improves sans clocks.

I always use this:

http://www.amadirectlink.com/legisltn/laws.asp

It doesn't say if speedos or tachs are required for Michigan though.

I wouldn't rely on the ama link tot tell you if a speedo is required. It doesn't say one is required for NY but I know it is because I used to do bike inspections and not having one is automatic grounds for failure.

There is no state requirement for a tach anywhere I have ever seen but I am going to go out on a limb here and say every state requires you to have a speedo of some kind since it is a requirement of manufacture by the Federal Department of Transportation.

a digital Bicycle speedo is a good option, so is a benjie headlight with a speedo mounted in back. cycle-ex has a kit to mount a speedo to the fork leg. There are ways to keep it legal and keep the open top clamp look.

Apart from what everyone else has said, in this day of revenue raising speed cameras, do you really want to run without one?

Where I live you must have a speedo, but they don't say how big or where it has to be mounted.

I have a wireless bicycle computer that I can put in my pocket. If that turns out to be illegal i'll mount it inside my helmet where I can see it.

+1 on that have been using it on my supermotard for 2 years now, works great and can adjust for any wheel circumference you want.

I have tried various wireless bike computers on motorcycles, and I find them unreliable. Who has good experience with a wireless one being reliable?  LMK what one worked for you and I will give it a go, I run a bike shop and get these things @ cost or better.

I currently run a Sigma wired model fork mounted behind the left fork leg, magnet glued to the inside of the brake disk. Super reliable, but sadly no backlight. I have friends at Vetta/Acumen who are sending me a few back lit models for testing, and they do custom colors/designs..... I will let ya know how it works out.

750cafe,do you glue the magnet to the rotor because you cant get the reciever close enough to run it on the spoke? or just cuz its cleaner? have you tried a specialized one before? im going to mount mine today..but also, no backlight

Course...   you could always tell the cop your a man and yes you do know how fast you were going... just use the rpms thats the best way to tell speed changes and after a while you get good at it.

Cleaner looking, and the magnet cant spin/move around like a spoke magnet can.

Specialized computers I have some experience with on bikes, but not on MC's.
My biggest issue w/ wireless is that you get lots of interference from some of the electronics/electrics on the bike, and the transmitter is big, ugly, and is yet another battery to go dead.

a few of you have mentioned back light. that makes me think that i've never done any night driving in or on anything without some kind of light in the dash. might be kind of hard to get used to.
maybe if i go with no gauges i'll have to mount my ipod to back of my headlight.
then again steve jobs might have a speedopod or an ipometer in the works.

I ran a bike speedo for about a month this summer, till it fell off one night. It really didn't give me a very accurate speed but put me in the neighborhood.Rode the rest of the summer without a speedo and had no issues. Even got pulled over twice without mention.

I hate to be right sometimes ;)

wired is the hook up, if run the wire with the brake hose it doesn't even look too bad.

Check out that link at the bottom of my last post, I have done some cool custom ones in the past for my race team, maybe I can get a group order together for SOHC4 ones if there is interest. the VL110 is the becent reliable wired one, custom runs around $60.
