wiring guru needed
« on: September 25, 2005, 09:09:08 AM »
Here's a kicker..the person that owned this bike before me had the black wire on the seleniod connected to the yellow/red connecter and the yellow/red wire from the solenoid connectet to the white on the regulator.

Now there is a green/red conecter/wire with nothing conected to it.

The solenid that I took off my 550k has a yellow/red and a green/red.

Should I connect them the way it should be???

Also can anyone tell me why the misswiring is here..is it to jump or bypass something??

Would help if you said what the bike was
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

On a 550 the starter has ...........yellow/red,     Black,    Red.        aside from the main lead.
The green / red  (Light green / red) is the neutral wire typically.
Black wire is usually 12V from the ignition.
Yellow / red is grounded with the starter button on the handlebar.
White comes from the alternator.

Looks like you got a mess there, if it works well'n good
The solenoid on a 550K has...Y/R to G/R on the starter switch. which completes the ground.
and black which completes the live 12V

White from the reg.....? ???
Have you a drawing.?

I connected the yellow/red from the celamiod to yellw/red near where it goes and the green/red to the green/ red
Is this supposed to be reversed.

Is there anyone with a 76 750 that can confirm the color coding in the headlight buckett and from the solenoid.

Should like colors be connected together?/?

The bike runs and the lights work but im wondering if problems will arise out on the road.

If all the parts are original then like colours connect to like colours, always.
If someone used handlebar switchgear, headlight connectors, instruments, etc from a different bike... even if all the same functions are there the wire colours might be different. Some wires might be left over, in general this is safe as Honda tried to have any wires where shorting to ground would be exciting terminate with a female connector with the metal covered by the plastic sleeve.
What's the problem in the headlight shell? The only time you may have different colour wires connected is if you bypass the clutch switch. Even those two are difficult to connect as they are both female ends.

Hi, How are you? Just went thru the same absolute hell on my '76 CB750 Super Sport. Seems there's 3 wires that go to the switch in the handlebars.. this appears to be a couple years' only thing.. It seems the third wire temporarily turns off the headlite to allow maximum cranking power to the starter. I could not find the right switch anywhere, so I cheated pretty bad... I ran the yellow with red tracer wire (from starter solenoid) to one side of a temporary push button switch... and the solid black wire to the other side (12 volts hot..) (radio shack units really suck, BTW.... Good thing they give you several in the pack, as they cannot take much abuse..). This switch I mounted in the bars at the same location but it fell apart quickly... I could not replace it too easily as the last person who had it butchered the wires to 1/4" long stumps. So I ran another pushbutton switch to a flat plate that I fastened to the left hand side of the trees. Now this means the starter will engage any time it is pressed, but I wanted to get the thing up and running, and it is in a hard to bump location. The light issue was addressed by the previous owner with a simple rocker switch to turn on and off the headlite... The hi/lo switch works as normal.. go figure... So I have 2 non-stock switches, but it works. This snafu was apparently the reason I got the bike in the first place, as the previous owner just gave up on it and let it sit for over 1 year.  The realisation came from looking at the Clymers manual.. in the back wiring section... I "assumed" I had a K6, but the 1977 CB750F diagram is the one that matched up with my harness... As I'm looking at it here, the red/yellow goes to the starter solenoid, the black is hot and the red/black goes to work the headlite... I reckon the best thing to do is find an intact bike harness to compare to and fix mine the right way.  It works as it should for now.. hope this helps.. and good luck with your project.
