Repair of bent steering stop
« on: December 09, 2008, 12:09:36 PM »
The left side steering stop pin on my CB750K1 lower triple clamp is bent which is causing some minor fouling of the right fork cover with the tank when the handlebars are full lock right.  (I missed this during my rebuild or I would have fixed it.)  I'd guess the pin is bent perhaps 10-degrees or so.

If I try and hammer it back straight "in situ" am I likely to snap it off?  Take it off and bend it back with heat?  Shim it?  Your recommendations please.

This happened to one of my triple clamps.I used heat to get it right.
On another triple clamp the steering stop had snapped off altogether, so I made a steering stop with an 8mm thread on the end. I then  drilled and tapped a 8mm thread in the triple tree and brazed it in place. Still there 7 years later

Thanks for response.

The bike is reasonably stock and nice, so my first inclination is to do this, but after taking the front end apart to get the bottom triple off, I'd hate to end up snapping it off.  With a propane torch for heating, am I likely to get it straight without having it break?

I can shim (or drill and tap it with bolt as you suggest) in-situ and nobody would know any better, but if I can get it right, I'd prefer the bending approach.

I used oxy/propane but oxy/acetylene would be as good or better.
You need to get it red hot.

Or bend it till it snaps off and weld it back on
