UK TV License Fee
« on: December 10, 2008, 04:02:34 PM »
Just curious, ran across this on another forum. Is it true that in the UK you have to pay an annual license fee (approx. $200 UD) just to have a TV set in your home? Oh, and you can get a half cost waiver if you are blind? No, kidding, that's what someone said. :-\
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

It's so the 'Beeb' (the British Broadcasting Company) can have programming without commercials. Or at least that's what it was all about went I lived in the UK.

They have cat TV detector vans that roam the streets and can tell if you have the TV on without a licence. Sorry, had to throw a Python-ism in there.

Is that the same fee no matter how many TV's you have, or do you pay per TV set?

If it does eliminate TV commercials, I might go for it, hate the damn things.  >:(

Ive always been curious...how do the TV detector vans work? Whats the signal they are looking for? And can they really isolate down to one house (in a block of flats for instance?)

cheers

What if (or can you) subscribe to satellite in the UK?  Do you still have to pay their "tax"?

If you own a telly regardless how your programmes are received then you have to pay the licence fee.... or pay the fine or jail.

Most if not all tv's IF sections emit radiation in the form of of a radio frequency so all they would have to do is look for that frequency range, (can't remember now what it is) filter out the others and amplify, bang there you go, Radio also emits an IF frequency. If my memory serves me right they had licenses in Canada for radios as well.

The fee only eliminates commercials on the BBC channels the rest of the channels are full of the bloody things.

We had this in Israel.  Must have inherited it from the British Mandate.  Thanks alot, Brits!

When all television and radio was government run, I guess it made some sort of sense.  Well, some sort...

What was really annoying was that we didn't even own a TV, but we kept getting billed.  Then we would get an arrears notice with threats of legal action.  I would have to go down and argue with the bureaucrats that I don't even own a TV set.  And so it would go...  Finally I told them that if they wanted they could come to my flat and take our fictitious TV set.  That shut them up for a while.

I think that 40p per day is a small price to pay for commercial-free TV.

I may be in a minority here, but recent experience on the UKs free digital TV service (Freeview) has shown me what it would be like without the BBC...

I will not subscribe to satellite or cable on principle.

I don't think that they use TV detector vans anymore as like car tax and insurance, they have a database. If you are not on it, they assume that you are guilty.

My daughter is at university in London and watches on-line.  The rules here are interesting because the TV License is only a requirement for watching live TV (ie as it is broadcast). Any time delay or streamed programmes are not live and therefore you don't need a license.  At the moment the BBC does not stream live TV (ie sync-ed with the live broadcast) but they are planning to do so.  Interesting conundrum for them I think as they can't demand that every owner of a PC buys a TV license.

Thay can't can they?

Seems like they can.  Or they'll just make up some other ridiculous tax to offset it.  Call it the Internet Use Tax or somesuch.  Seems like nobody over there makes any kind of stink about being taxed so highly, so what the hell.

How about a tax on air conditioners, a largess tax on gas guzzlers, and Bathtub tax?

Didn't Thatcher try to impose a head tax on all citizens?  Your parents were taxed when you were born, When you die, you get taxed, so why not when you breathe?

Some fees we have learned to live with: Small Trailer registration, mopeds, drivers license, road tolls, passport renewal, other government "services", Sales Tax....etc.

But it does come as a shock to hear about a TV tax and how its regulated.  Have sales of polarized wire grids taken off in the UK by any chance? ;D

And what about tin-foil hats?

I'd think wearers of tin-foil hats might be justified over there.

Well an internet use tax does not exist as such but comcast is putting a limit on bandwidth a person can use. So I am sure they will also force other questionable things thru.

All this reminds me of the Beatles song 'Taxman' from the Revolver LP:

Let me tell you how it will be.
There's one for you, nineteen for me,

'Cause I'm the taxman.Yeah, I'm the taxman.

Should five percent appear too small,
Be thankful I don't take it all.

'Cause I'm the taxman. Yeah, I'm the taxman.

If you drive a car, I'll tax the street.
If you try to sit, I'll tax your seat.
If you get too cold, I'll tax the heat.
If you take a walk, I'll tax your feet.

'Cause I'm the taxman. Yeah, I'm the taxman.

Don't ask me what I want it for,
(Ah ha, Mr. Wilson.)
If you don't want to pay some more.
(Ah ha, Mr. Heath.)

'Cause I'm the taxman. Yeah, I'm the taxman.

And my advice to those who die.
Declare the pennies on your eyes.

'Cause I'm the taxman. Yeah, I'm the taxman,
And you're working for no one but me.
