But it does come as a shock to hear about a TV tax and how its regulated.  Have sales of polarized wire grids taken off in the UK by any chance? ;D

The TV licence people have every address in the country and if you don’t pay the money they can come in the house and have a look, they use the police to do this…..no licence will result in a fine or jail even if they just find a receiver like an aerial on the roof or loft.

The Faraday cadge would not work. >:(

Thatcher would have implemented some of the other tax scams you mention had she stayed in power (she never started the BBC scam) (b) itch  ;D

Cheers

TV Gestapo!!!     Bwaaaahaaaaaa!!!  You people need to get your guns back so the government is afraid of the people instead of the other way around!

That's why you've slid down that slippery slope to the point where you have freakin TV Gestapo.  Take back your human rights, man!

How many police compared to how many people? Even simple weight of numbers would do the trick.  Your parliament needs a kick in the ass.

I'm sorry for you.

I haven't been to London since August 2001, but I was pretty surprised that the British people were so complacent about government control even then.  I cannot fathom the people accepting 4UKP per LITER of gasoline due to the excessive taxes the government imposed even back then.

With very few exceptions, this is sadly true.

Admittedly, I didn't watch too much TV in London on my trips there, but the two nights or so when I did, I felt the programming was roughly as bad as it is here.

But at least you get something worthwhile to watch!!!! Over here it's "200 channels and nothing on".

The government has to tax the middle classes heavily to pay for the skyrocketing pensions (index linked) that they have handed out to all of the government employees.

You guys in the UK may want to keep your mouths shut or the U.S. may have to invade to protect your rights and to protect you from your own government!

We did have oil/natural gas in the North Sea but Maggie Thatcher sold it all off to the highest bidder… silly woman.

France also imposes a yearly tax on television ownership, about 115. euros for us. We've had an ongoing struggle to stop receiving this tax bill as we don't own a tv set, but it's not very easy to sway French bureaucracy, as it's mired in reams and reams of paperwork!

I think the stiff upper lip thing came from WWII when our country got absolutely smashed by 100’s of German bombers every night but ordinary people just got on with their lives amongst all the death and destruction.

I can refute that, wholeheartedly.  :) I was one of the first kids in England to be fitted with braces, in the mid-60's. And it was free! And it worked!

Getting back to the UK TV licence thread, I've read an article recently about a story where someone was charged with a fine for not paying his TV licence here in the UK. Problem was he didn't even have a TV in his flat!! But no, the powers that be wouldn't accept that. So they kept on pestering him with threatening letters and he kept answering back "But I don't own a TV!" . He even invited the licencing authorities to visit his flat to see for themselves. But no, they would'nt come round. So to cut a long story short he was hauled before the beak (magistrate) who laughed so hard he threw the case out of court.
Did the guy get and apology from the licencing authorities?  No.
Did he get an explaination?   Yes.

Computer error!!

If in doubt blame the machine, not the person inputting the information. ;)
