what master cylinder to use??
« on: December 10, 2008, 07:49:43 PM »
I was going to rebuild my master cylinder because it was leaking and was quite coroded inside. i thought i might update to a newer MC does anyone know what will work as far as just replacing it with a modern MC off a newer bike? i see some listed as "DUAL" caliper but does it really matter? i mean it will just be more sensitive if i have one designed for a larger brake system? am i correct in thinkin this? i found this on ebay and was considering it any input??

I remembered seeing a discussion of the piston size and it's effect on single and dual setups. Unfortunately, I'm not a hydraulic engineer but I buy the premise  ;)

I have seen that one on previous posts and also the one below. I think they are both 14mm piston. I, too, am curious about people's experience with these...

i like the one that i posted mainly becasue i can run one SS brake line and get rid of the stupid pressure switch housing becasue it has the brake light switch built into it. the stock mc is also 14 mm correct?

Ooo go for this - it works amazingly well, looks like an authentic part of the time (well it was!) and you can bleed these up to get the lever rock hard! Great stuff....

I got the same one, and it works fine.  There was no real improvement in firmness or feel, but it does potentially simplify the hose routing since you can remove the pressure switch and the associated block, and run a straight line.  It is sometimes difficult to bleed the block.

Yeah, I had that same one on my F1. It worked.  :-\  I was hoping for a little better feel or power but got neither. It worked. That's about it, really.

Single right now... working on a dual setup for next summer... Like the others said it works fine no huge change from the stock one. Biggest thing for me is my stock one had road rash and leaked so for a few $$ more than a seal kit I got a bran new master.  :P

That picture you posted is a radial MC.... Little different configuration but is commonly used in hi-po applications. I used one on my drag bike and it seemed to withstand anything I could throw at it.

Then again for almost $300+ new they better.

Thanks for the clarification, I didn't know the manufacturer (I be ignorant) and read up on the radial MCs. The site below has a nice explanation as well as many great looking levers...You're right, tho, taint cheap!

No - it ain't cheap but damn it's good! One cast iron 290mm disc and one of these and I can get my old black bomber doing monster stoppies - superb!!

Just got one for my cb750 too but with the old honda calipers I can't bleed them up to be very effective. If I used the corresponding AP classic caliper though - awesome.

AP are a fantastic brake firm - been going for years in the UK and they are used on all the top performance cars  too.

they look like nice products, i think im going with the cheapo though, and a single SS line down to the caliper. considering i have a total of 700 into the bike+build 3 to 4 hundo is too much to spend. Thanks for the replys on the post, once again this board is the best

Lord Moonie:
I was flipping through the calipers on the AP site and was having a hard time spotting the classic caliper...got a part no.?

I scoured ebay looking for a radial MC that was cheap, average prices are around $175-$200.

Any modern MC with a remote reservoir should be more than enough to handle the old caliper(s). GSXR,CBR,ZX.... any of those will work.

Then all you have to do is find a year with a cable draw clutch perch that matches the lever on the MC.

Sure thing - CP2215. Go to the main apracing website then click on motorcycle tab at the top right, scroll doen to select maser cylinders from the fly out menu and below the pictures on the right is another link to "classic master cylinders" or somehting like that.

Enjoy!  ;D

Found that one no problem...but I was referring to your earlier statement with regards to caliper:

It's the caliper I was curious about. Thanks for the info so far. I think I see one of these in my (formerly low-dollar) 550 project.
