Buy this bike?
« on: December 11, 2008, 06:31:20 PM »
http://lacrosse.craigslist.org/mcy/954061853.html

I'm thinkin about picking up this bike, the guy says he picked it up in japan or something.
I called him he said its got 12,000 miles and no leaks, and had it licensed last year.

What'd ya think?
Should I buy it?

Doesn't look like it has any parts that would look good on a cafe themed bike, if I were you I'd put the money towards some more tools, what would your plans with be?

haha yeah I know, but If I bring my battery and the bike starts... and runs decent. It would seem like a good idea.
Plus its not a big deal to go look at it, its only like 30 min away and I gota go there sometime this week anyways.

As for the bike being cafe style... you shoulda seen the bike I have right now before I started taking it apart.
Huge wind jammer, big back rest, highway pegs, it didnt look at all like a cafe bike.

I was thinking I might actually just pretty much leave it the way it is, get it running good and ride it as is, and just have my other bike be the cafe in the family.

Absolutely go check it out. If it will run decent, I'd say it's worth the price.

If it wouldn't take much to get it running then, I'd say get it so you have something to ride while you're working on the other one. That's what I have going on now.

For that sort of money, it's a steal.
Bars seat and exhaust would transform it or at that price you could part it out and make some money.

Almost every old Honda I have ever put back on the street cost me a clean Grand ($1000) to get right in parts alone.  Tires, battery, oil change, carb work, fork work, seat cover, paint, bulbs, points, yada yada.  I don't restore, I just make them roadworthy and pleasing to the eye.

I always love the ones where the guy says, "all it needed was brakes when I parked it" That basically says "I have just lied to you and I am an untrustable idiot"  unless of course it starts and runs like new and it does need brakes.  ;D

The bike always gets the money in the end. 300 now and 700 later. Or 700 now and 300 later...  :'(

300 now and 700 later is about were I am with my avatar. But I am very much not convinced of your 700 now and 300 later. One could spend $1000 now and still need the 700 later.

Buy it. Think about what to do with it later.

Well, its needs new starter solenoid. Which he has for a CB 500 and is willing to give to me with the bike.
Everything looks great on it, pipes are rusty but no holes, no oil leaks from anywhere... he said I couldn't fiddle with the bike tho until I bought it. (Understandable I guess) Plus if I started the bike in front of him, which, Im pretty sure I could. He would raise the asking price.

So how hard is it to switch the starter solenoid?

I'll do that tomorrow, thats my first day of trying to get the bike running... and its -5 degrees here right now  :o
But, a milk house heater can go a long way in a well insulated garage... I hope...

First thing I try, just switch the solenoid and put my charged battery in. Oh and try and tape up the cracks in the rubber between the carbs and the air filter, Dont worry thats just to see if it starts for now, if it doesn't and well even if it does I have good rubber from my other bike because I'm running pods on that one. So I'll switch them out. No worries

.... I hope it starts

Well I pulled the old battery, put in my new one, and..... started the bike on the second kick  ;D, and it was 20 degrees in my garage!
No odd noise's carbs might need to be cleaned and synched, from what I can tell its prob. going to need new fork seals and some work on the front brakes, but hey it was 375 bucks!

I'll try and get some pictures up later.

Now, that smile on your face when it fired up was worth every penny, wasn't it?
