Kerker exhaust patch options - a few pics
« on: December 02, 2008, 08:35:00 PM »
I bought this used header a few years ago with some rust holes in the collector.  I used JB weld as a patch which held up fine for a while.  The heat cycles gradually took their toll and it started to flake off.

I think a combination of extended wide open throttle and too much backpressure from my little Supertrapp silencer blew it all out.  In the future I'm going to un-cork the exhaust at the track.

Instead of going back with JB weld I'd like to have it welded up proper.  I was thinking of beating a piece of sheet metal to fit up tight and cover that whole area.  The grumpy old guy at my local exhaust place said it was too thin to weld and wanted nothing to do with it.

I'll probably haul it around to a few shops, just thought I'd get a few informed opinions first.

That's a dime for reference.

Just make a patch larger than the holes out of, I dunno, 14 gauge steel.  You might have to make two patches to get the contours right.  Then find someone to braze them on if its too thin to weld.  And take it to a welder, not a muffler shop.  Those guys are only interested in making new stuff.  That shouldn't be any problem for a decent welder to braze them on.

This was beyond my brother in law's welding ability, so I took it here:

They had it done the next day.  If you're around Houston and need something a little unusual done, they seem equipped to handle it.

Thats what I'm talkin about. ;)  And that's how I would have done it, too.
