Custom Frame
« on: December 15, 2008, 09:49:25 AM »
Is there any interest in custom frames here. Maybe somthing with a hidden oil tank or adaptable to both standard forks and mondern forks, rear set mounts.  What would you want in a frame if you could build it or buy it?

1.) Which model SOHC? 350, 400, 500, 550, 650, 750? (or any/all of the above?)

2.) Cafe, Chopper or just a new standard frame?

As for a Cafe frame, here is what I think would be nice:
 - Mono-Shock rear suspention
 - Lighter frame (tresile style? Worked for Martin and Ducati)
 - Body work (including tank) either to come with, or be easily adapted from another bike.
 -  - A custom frame is great, but finding a tank that you "Hope" will fit is a pain in the butt.
 -  - Design the frame to take a stock tank?
 - for a 750 either A.) Make it so that engine work can be done with Frame in Chassis, or B.) Make the engine EASILY removeable.

The price will depend on the number of orders and the amount of detail. Once we have a list, I will work with my builder to get the design and a price.

+1 on the easy access to the engine and also a lighter frame would be nice as long as it is kept rigid and strong.

That and fit a cb500/550/650 engine! (& STD cb650 neck)
(doesn't the 500 use the same motor mount points as the 550/650 motors???)
Would like to see a mono shock as well.
However, the fatty tire listed up there, mabey a separate rear swingarms could be offered.
I think about a 140 or 150 rear is nice.

Trelis frame

??
I've got limited experience with different frames, do you have a pic you could share of a good example?
Sounds interesting though.

Check out this Martin Framed F2. Good example of a Trelis frame (or just about any modern Day Ducati).

I would love to see a nice dropseat chopper frame for the 500/550s.  One for a 750 would be ok too.  Something with a little rake to it but not overly wild.  Think of a prostreet type of frame then drop the seat.

Making everyone happy with a custom frame is a tough job.
Change too much and nothing stock fits.
The backbone tail section should accept stock and aftermarket tanks and tail sections (sohc specific), for simplicity.
But in a cafe I would see a frame with twin shocks still, longer swingarm, boxed, rearset mounts, mounts/tabs for buddy pegs or exhaust hangers, oil cooler mount tabs, adjustable steering lock and maybe eccentric headstock for steering angle changes including triple clamps which provide more width for a wider wheel setup.
Mounts or tabs could be just threaded bosses in the frame so they wouldn't be so unsightly if not used.

A trellis frame will make for a wide frame. Mono shock will make for a long bike as the motor/tranny is long and not compact as todays motors are. An overhead monoshock could shorten things up a bit, but there wouldn't be room for both the airbox/electrics and shock.

A stock styled frame, braced where they are braced now (for roadracing) with flush mounts/tabs would be the most cost effective.
Bimota kit style comes to mind... Parts or roller.

Not cheap in todays market!
Look at TTR stuff. Beautiful, but not cheap.

(1) lighter, trellis frame;
(2) accept stock tank;
(3) mount for rear sets;
(4) make easier to remove engine (maybe bolt engine to bottom of frame as a partially-stressed member a la Ducati)

I think we have a good start here, and I will work to get us a price. What would you be willing to pay for something like this?

(1) lighter, trellis frame;
(2) accept stock tank;
(3) mount for rear sets;
(4) make easier to remove engine (maybe bolt engine to bottom of frame as a partially-stressed member a la Ducati)
(5 )interchangable fork , so you can use stock forks or change to modern forks.

I'd love to see a price under $500, but chopper frames go for around $800 or so.
