Anyone running an extended swingarm on their CB ?
« on: September 28, 2005, 01:40:09 PM »
yO ,

Anyone running an extended swingarm on their CB ? I believe I saw a few pics of these bikes with e-longated swingarms , but I am having trouble finding them.

Anyone manf. a aftermarket extended swingarm I can purchase , or will I have to have mine chopped ??

Not that I want to turn my bike into a dragbike , just want to make it alittle longer , for overall look.
Figure around a 4-6'' stretch should do nicely, then just get a longer chain , and add length to the brake rod and such..

Anyone have any ideas , opinions , etc..... ????

I believe that cd811 put an extended swingarm on his orange monster.

Send him out a PM and ask.

I think you can use a 1979-1980 DOHC cb750 swingarm. It should fit in the frame but it is a bit longer than stock. Not sure if you need to run your existing rear wheel or need to use the 79-80 wheel. If you use a supersport rear you get a disc brake rear but have to run a comstar.

DammitDan --->  Sent CD811 a PM

Geeto67 --->  Thanks for the tip. How much longer is a arm from a 1979 DOHC than the one on my ride ? I think I might just be better off taking the stock one off and adding some length to it...

Anyone else have any ideas ??

I dont know if I would add to swingarm. You have to be very carefull to maintain the straight lines to prevent problems. Also I dont know if this is a big deal, but you want to do a 530 chain conversion is youuse a 630. This will save weight and reduce chain slap. Just thoughts. I have never done this and have no reason to but there is no point in modifying something and making it unsafe to ride.

I'm not sure how much longer the 79 swingarm is, I'll measure it tonight. Off the top of my head I wanna say it is 5"-6" longer but I am not sure.

Adding to the swingarm is not that unsafe as drag racers do it all the time. There are plenty of modern street bikes roaming around with lengthened swingers also. The problem is finding a shop that does the mod. Personally If i was going to go crazy enough to lengthen a stock cb750 swingarm I would lop it off at the pivot and build a new square tube arm around the rear wheel I wanted to use (imagine using a fatboy rear rim with stock harley spacers on the cb750).

From a builders stabndpoint it is actually easier to build a swinger from scratch than it is to add length to an existing one, espically if the existing one is 30+ years old and round tube. All you need is a flat surface, a level, a straightedge, a ruler, a welder, a chopsaw, and some square tube. If you know what your rear wheel and axle is going to be you can even use the adjusters off that bike (I am partial to pre 1990 fzr600 rear adjusters when dealing with square tube swingarms).

...that pic is of his swingarm...not mine, but I'm about half way through doing the same thing in my welding class, and it is going pretty good.  I'v tacked the plates in place (6 inches long X 7 inches wide) and and now am working on leveling it out.  Not a tough mod at all if u have a grinder, welder, and the materials.

Again I was only stating about keeping the arm straight. If a person has the skills go for it then.
