Do you have a torque wrench attachment that will fit that 4 notch nut?

With the front off the ground, and preferable no cables or wires to interfere, I would tighten it down by hand, and then with a large channel lock type pliar to where turning the fork side to side feels a bit impaired. Also, a shock adjusting wrench may fit. Then loosen it a tad (1/4 turn or less) to where the fork moves smoothly and continue the reassembly.

You may need to tighten it again after riding as they may seat themselves after hitting a few bumps.

I'd be interested in others procedures.

For the outer chrome steering stem nut the torque is 57-86 ft/lbs. Always be sure to loosen the upper tree pinch bolts before torquing this down(if forks are installed) so that things don't get cock-eyed.

As for that notched retaining washer thingy I use the same method, MCRider. When making further adjustments after riding a bit I slip a screwdriver into one of the notches and bang with a hammer, not pretty I know ;) :)

Oh yes I wasn't thinking about the top chrome nut.

And yes that's how I make my "final" adjustment as well.   :P

Just for arguements sake, 50 ft/lb is about what most people can pull with a wrench or a standard-length half-inch drive rachet.  So just good and tight with a breakover should get it.  Don't go crazy with it, you might want to get it off again someday ;)
