My clutch cable broke.. I think?
« on: December 16, 2008, 11:16:36 AM »
So I was riding my CB550 around, having a great time
when I hear a *SNAP* and my clutch lever goes loose and starts flapping around.
I pull over to the side of the road and inspect the lever to find this:

My question is, how do I re-attach to to the lever? I spent a good amount of time trying to kink the wire into the lever, but it wouldn't hold when I tried to work it. Is it supposted to look like that... or did a peice come off?  ???

Excuse my ignorance, but I don't really have another bike to referance and the two shop manuals I have don't cover anything about it...

Thanks  ;D
Cheers!

it's broken. you may be able to have it shortened and a new nipple attached but are probably better off getting a new Honda cable or motion pro cable. depends on the vendors in your area

I have a cable end (set-screw type) that lives in with the toolkit for such occasions.

Here's what your cable ends should look like:

Sure.

Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Good idea Mark, one of those cable attaching screw things off a ceramic electrical fitting would work.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

heh heh heh.....

I'm pretty sure that I've seen those cable ends on the 'HELP' rack at the auto parts....

.... a heater cable end for an early Bug would probably work.....

Mine came installed on the clutch cable by a p.o. and was hanging on by 3 or 4 wire strands and I ordered a new cable as soon as I saw it. ??? The clutch works a lot smoother with a new cable.

kept that silly end anyway.

ya never know........

official name for those emergency ends is "Solderless Nipples"

OK so that starts the nipple thread again

That cable looks really dry. When you get a new cable, get some PJ1 cable lube. Stuff is well, good stuff.
