750 F3 clutch electrical connections
« on: December 21, 2008, 07:51:34 PM »
I have been sorting out the wiring on my F3 project. So far it is promising as almost everything works. The hi-lo switch on the left handlebar controller, howver, is stuck and the headlight doesn't work. It worked once, until I forced the switch to the high beam and now I have no lights. I assume it is shorted. I have a very nice controller I could use, but it is from an earlier 750 and it doesn't have the two wires that run to the clutch. I want to use the starter on this bike, and I assume that it a safety feature to keep you from engaging the starter while in gear without depressing the clutch lever. So I assume those connections must be connected. Can I run the two wires from the wire harness together to bypass the controller to complete the connection? Or will that start a fire or explosion or catastrophic volcanic short or something? The engine is not in the bike so I can't just hook them up and find out what happens.

Thanks.

Just connect the wires and insulate the join, then remember to get the green light on before starting the engine

The headlight switch is mechanically simple. Could be that you just dislodged some rust when forcing it that is now interfering with proper connection. I would try taking the switch off the bars and give the internals a good clean with WD-40 before opting for a permanent solution that leaves the clutch switch inoperable.
Give me..a frame to build a bike on, and my imagination will build upon that frame

So today I drenched the hi-lo switch with wd40, as you suggested, Sean. It moves freely again, but I'll need to let it dry out a bit before I try the lights. I'd rather keep the electrics stock on this bike, if only for sentimental reasons. I might sell it someday. I don't mind if the buyer can't figure out where the engine, seat, back fender and long forks came from, but I need it to be safe....

The brakes, with the dual piston calipers on the front, should be stunning.

Merry Christmas, y'all.
