WTF was Honda thinking??

Once in a while I have to wonder why they do things.

 Like on 77/78 750,s they near doubled the thickness of the clutch  outer inspection cover.. Now the only reason I could see is it might decrease noise??

Of not, it is just a waste of steel on a bike that was already heavier than previous years.. I mean strong enough to weld footpegs to, I dont get it. ???

Probably decided to do that at the same meeting some idiot suggested "why not leave the CB650 without a kick starter"?
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Hey 754,

Yeah relax it's X-mas, concerning the cover I suspect because of the use of heavier clutchsprings. If you feel at a cover of a bike you can feel, some, movement of the case.

Vox, I am talking the chrome outer cover that comes off to attach clutch cable, and adjust freeplay.. not affected by the springs.. the one folks like to replace with a finned one.

Maybe noise as requirements were starting to tighten? The cam covers are thicker and heavier as well. Maybe just a different vendor?

I am thinking of using them three mounts to hold a billet bracket with a hydraulic clutch unit, then boring through the main cover and using an o-ring to seal it. If that doesnt work may have to build whole cover.

Did some work on a Nascar style clutch release for a Cobra with a side-oiler. Was thinking if the hydraulic clutch unit has threads on the outside of it you could turn it in or out to adjust freeplay, then lock in place.. am thinking going hydraulic will  create a freplay problem?

I remeber that part, weighed about 30 lbs  ::)
I was working for Leslie Griffith Motors in 78, it was on F2 I had to do a cam cover change on (bike had fallen onto edge of curb and cracked right side, insurance was paying)
 Didn't some of them have a thick rubber buffer inside as well?
 It was to reduce noise as far as I can remember but I think they were really for German market (remember the proposed noise legislation in Germany?)
 BMW boxer couldn't meet db noise limits at 30mph with a dead engine
 Sometimes I'm amazed at the crap I remember (conditional learning  :D)

I got several laying in the shop, one where I see it all the time, and I always think, "Yup that off the latest most improved model...!!"


I think the lighter ones had a thin layer of grey rubber but not everywhere, much like point covers had.

Yep, you could see the brush marks in the grey 'paint' on most of the early ones.
 I think it was done for protection on the edges as much as anything else because I cleaned some off and there was only nickel on the curved bits
