Wire routing
« on: December 27, 2008, 09:02:59 PM »
I'm reassembling my 1971 CB-750. I've got to the point where I'm putting back the neutral safety switch. I know where it goes and all. What I don't know is how to route the wire from the switch to the wire harness. I can't remember how it goes. Can somebody tell me or show me a picture.  Does the wire go thru the engine someplace or what?

I recall it goes out of the engine from the stator cover through a rubber plug that is half moon shaped.  That leads to a connector with the 3 yellow stator wires in it.  The chain cover on the engine has a hole in the top for those wires to exit.  Your oil pressure wire goes that route also.

There is a cutout in the chain sprocket cover where it fits to the engine case. There is a bundle of wires (as KCC mentioned) along with the heavy lead for the starter motor that go through there. On the case in the area under the cover, there is a metal band that is folded over to retain the wire harness. The 3 yellow and green and white wires go under the shifter mechanism cover en route to the alternator. The wire for the oil pressure light follows along with the starter motor cable to the cavity where the starter motor mounts. The neutral switch wire goes down and makes a 90 degree turn around the engine case and runs along the bottom of the engine to the switch. I think there are one or two more metal clips that hold the wire in place on the bottom. Make sure the woven cover on the neutral switch wire is in good shape as where the wire bends around the case is a spot where the wire can chafe on the sharp edge of the casting and short out, causing a false neutral light.

This pic might help:

Jonesy, thats a nice picture, thanks. Additional question, could I get a close up of the metal band that holds the wires. How many bands are there?  I would like to see what bolt it hooks on to and what it's shaped like. When a person tears down an engine completly, it's hard to remember all the little paths the wires take. I'm also wondering about the point wires, how they are routed.  (My case was cracked and I replace it)

I'll dig through my photos and see what I have. Stay tuned.

Here's a shot from the breakdown showing the wire tab (#11). Looks like there is only one to retain the neutral wire along the bottom of the engine:
