Topic: Where to get torque wrench calibrated?

I have a clicky type torque wrench that is a few years old that I would like to have calibrated before I start reassembling my 350F engine. Where can/should I have this done?

Aside from driving around aimlessly, how can I find a SnapOn truck?

Tried to see if I could locate one from the snap-on site but it won't unless you are a professional in the trade, not someone at the house.

You might stop by a local car/bike dealer or a local shop and ask when the snap-on guy comes by, then show up.

Do it yourself with a postal spring balance (or any other that is accurate0 and some string.

Clamp the square drive in the vice and measure exactly 1 foot (12 inches) from the middle of the square and attach your string there.

Attach spring balance and pull till wrench clicks

Poundage on balance should be same as setting on wrench

DONT FORGET

Most torque wrenches are only +or- 10%

Expensive ones are +or- 5%

Snap on torque meters +or- 2%

Snap-on might be in the phone book, or most body shop guys will have his card , unless they are Mac guys.

Also, any large industrial plants nearby?? Their Quality Control dept may have a tester.
 
 Also tool repair guys that repair electric and pneumatic tools, they may have one..

  explain, I have done the same as bryanj many times to check a torque wrench, obviously you stop pulling when the wrench clicks else you could bend the shaft, but if that needed explaining I don't belive you should be using a torque wrench anyway.

It is really hard on it, the smaller the size the harder you clamp, to keep it from moving.. think 3/8 or 1/4 inch. If it has a ball detent in it there is a chance you can deform the square part.

So if you must play with it sacrifice a socket or an extension, they are not calibrated and are much cheaper.
