Chevrolet Colorado
« on: December 29, 2008, 08:05:10 PM »
I'm looking to buy a new-used mid size truck. i was wanting mid size for the gas mileage, extended cab for some extra storage inside, and then 4WD for those once in a blue moon encounters with getting stuck. colorado seems to exceed all my needs while others seem to be just as bad as full size trucks (besides toyota but the tacoma's are a little more expensive). i found an '05 with the I-5, 4WD, ext. cab and only 25K on the odo. it's at a GM dealer so it has the 12K/12 mo. warrantee. for a GM qualified used vehicle. just wondering who here's owns one? any complaints?

My complaint is the i-5. It just is not right to use a 5 banger! I also am not a fan of the style, I loved the last generation s-10.

As for REAL issues, I have not heard of any from people.

I suspect those trucks will do just fine for you.  I had a 1999 Tacoma with the TRD Supercharger on the 3.4l and put 100k on it.  I bought the truck used with 14k on it for $15k back in 2002, ran it for 4.5 years and sold it for 10k.  My point is that the retained value for resale is a point to consider.  You never know what your needs will be in 5 years or less, and it's nice not to take a bath on depreciation.

A friend and coworker of mine bough a new 2003 S-15 ZR2 and we put similar milage on and use.  The GMC's interior did not age as well.  Little things broke, handle for 3rd door failed several times in 100k.  Distributor failed for no apparent reason.  Most disturbing was how the flimsey tailgate bowed from him climbing in and out of the bed.  Sure they guy is 250lbs, but to see the releae handle bow and push so far out is odd.  All of the problems were fixable by a DIY kinda guy, and as a whole he was happy with the truck.  He did not do nearly as well as I did on resale, but the truck did serve him well.

I got rid of the Tacoma for a 2001 2500 HD crew-cab w 8.1 Allison.  I am happy with the truck, and got a great deal on it due to the big motor.  I needed it for my 28' enclosed trailer, but it's not for everyone.  I am sure happy I don't have a diesel since the price of fuel has been high for a while now.

Sorry for the rant, and hopefully an owner of a Colorado will comment.  Good Luck!

Not a Colorado owner, but a friend has one, and his only complaint is that he had to take it in to the dealer 3 times to have the catalitic converter(s) replaced.  Someting about them coming apart inside or clogging up.  He commutes daily about 75 miles.

i'd go with a toyota too. theyre more expensive to buy even used but theres a good reason for that, theyre almost impossible to kill. when i moved to florida i ended up giving my, now, former brother a 75 hi-lux that had 700k + miles on it. it still ran great with nothing more than a valve job done to it when i got it with 600k on it. the old ones rust is theyre even near a salty enviroment but, like the ones built lately, they were built like a tank, mechanically.
