Neutral Switch...no light
« on: December 29, 2008, 08:40:50 PM »
Hi everyone...this may be just as easy as I need to replace the neutral switch or possibly a faulty ground.  I have a Honda CB750 K6 which is now running fine...all electrical is a go except the neutral switch which has never lit since I bought the bike a few months back.

I've scanned most of the prior posts on this subject and alot of no light going off...can't find any switches available on ebay...is this a tough one to get...maybe will order through the dealership if not too expensive...so, should I just try and remove it and test the connections?...thanks, ron.

  • If you can't fix it with a hammer, it's electrical

Um, not to sound like a smartass, but is the bulb burnt out?

Also check your fuses, then take the plug for the nutral light, and switch it with your highbeam light or turn signal light and see if it's the connection, or the bulb.

1) The easiest test to do is, with the ignition "ON", short the wire that connects to the neutral switch to ground (frame).  This should turn on the light, which is what the neutral switch would normally do.  If this test works, then replace the neutral switch.  If that doesn't do the trick, then......
2) the next step would be to check for a burned out bulb, then......
3) check for voltage at the bulb.  If you have voltage at the bulb, then.......
4) try grounding out the opposite side of the bulb with a short piece of wire to turn the bulb on.
If that works, there's a break in the wire that runs to the neutral switch.
If you don't have voltage at the bulb with the ignition on, check the fuse (probably not the problem if everything else is working) and then trace the wires back through the loom to the connection in the headlight and check for voltage there.
Keep back-tracing until you find the break in the circuit.
The main thing to remember about the neutral switch and light is there's supposed to be voltage to the bulb whenever the ignition is on, and the neutral switch provides the ground to complete the circuit.
If you don't already have a repair manual for your bike by now, you need to get one.

If the electricals are stock and the neutral switch is bad the bike should start only if the clutch is in, even if your are in neutral.  If the switch is working the bike should start in neutral without operating the clutch. Just a check on switch performance.

Good luck

What's a K6, 1977?  I have an extra brand new neutral switch from a '77 550, part # 35752-323-000.  If you need it let me know.

Okay, so today I'm going to tackle my neutral switch problem and at the risk of being banned from this post 4ever I found out that the only ass around here is me, as in dumbass...it was a burnt out bulb!...well, thanks everyone...after reading all the posts and with the fact that the bike started in neutral without the clutch pulled in I started thinking the obvious...argh, ah well, it least it was easy.

Glad to hear that that was the problem and was an easy fix.
