yes, the rear sprockets are from Al 7075
and no, buying from a supplier costs less considering the costs of the material and the wear of the mill and cutting tools. three hours of work in addition.....

i am happy when there is one or the other who knows that we in austria do not have any kangaroos  ;)

austria vs germany: there is not much difference exept germany is 5(?) times larger.

only place i could think to post this

as far as i know, this bike is the result of a collaboration between colani and f.w.egli, trying to brake the 300km/h barriere. however, the fairing was not working, it was too dangerous to go high speeds lightening the front wheel and resulting in too much sidewind sensitiveness.
the record braking run was done with a "half fairing", the bike did one run over 330km/h, with an average speed of 272km/h which was a milestone these days.
engine was a turbo blown kawa Z 1000 motor, 280 rear wheel HP.

colani and egli ended the collaboration at the judges, however.

hello,

good and bad news:

+
last weekend I had been in schleiz competing in the "classic open" class. it was the first time i had been at the racetrack schleiz. here is a onboard video from a unknown guy with his K5: http://www.rennstrecken.tv/strecke/schleizer-dreieck/  (klick onboard suzuki K5).
my bike did well. handling was excellent, nothing to worry about and no wish to improve anything. the engine is a killer. in combination with the light weight of the bike my egli performed well, there had been more than one guy, wondering about the speed of this vintage racer.

-
we had to do 5x 20min practice sessions. at the end of the third session my engine stopped without any warnings. no metallic noise however, i thought the dyna S refused to do their job.
back in the paddock, it took 10 minutes to see that the camshaft didnt turn. obviously the heavy duty camchain broke. end of the weekend.

now at thome, the engine is disassemled, i saw that the camshaft broke where there are the threads to fasten the camchain sprocket. the missing piece of steel came between the chain and the crankshaft sprocket to brake the chain. fortunately there is no damage visible to the crankshaft. no damage to the pistons either. 2 inValves bent, 2exValves bent, a new chamchain and a new camshaft and the engine will be alive again.

this means, that i will not be able to travel with my eglireplika to Spa the coming weekend. instead i will come with our road racing guzzi.

That is too sad to hear.  The good thing is that it wasn't worse like having the rear tire lock up on you in a corner.  A floating piece of steel in an engine can play havoc.  It is also sad that you'll have ti ride the Guzzi ;D ;D ;D

sorry to hear of it mec. but, as 78ss says, it's good it wasn't worse.

none the less this must be a disappointment. bring back pix of spa!

btw: i must have jinxed you; just this weekend i was wondering how your were doing with your egli-rep.  :-\

because i did not have a spare cylinder base gasket, i modified a stock one to fit the 1000ccm sleeves. this was easy to do with the small cnc mill.

i have a worn stock camshaft, cut one of the mounting brackets with a saw and did some "repair TIG weldings". on to the lathe, a little grinding and soon the camshaft looked as a new one. only the hole and the M7 thread will to be machined (last picture, extra long drills).
i will try this fix with the webcam too, but i think this cam will end as a spare one, maybe will be used in a cheaper engine again.

where is a will, there is a way.

Sorry to hear of your problem but now we can watch as you do more  ;)

I noticed 241 on the K5 speedo. Assuming KPH. Was that when you were about to pass him? Thats 150mph in our language. Don't think you'll get 14K rpm but 241KPH could very well happen. Take it easy on those fancy new bikes.

Hi MEC, sorry to hear about your jinxed track day,

looks like a very rare failure to me..... any chance that you were over tightening that bolt?

If you got away from a cam failure with just a few bent valves, count yourself lucky!

Jerry, dont think that even Valentino Rossi with a on a kitted CB750 would be able to keep up with a well ridden 160rwhp GSXR1000 K5 , even with a big bore motor and 113rwhp  ;)

G'Day Mec, beautiful work as usual, did you work out how the tab broke on the camshaft? Anything to do with the slotted sprocket? Also, can you take a pic of your camchain adjuster mate? It looks very interesting..................  ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

back from Spa, and very tired.....

first impressions: guzzi, guzzi, guzzi.
never seen as much moto guzzis going that fast. weather, sunny, rainy, warm and cold.

back to my engine: there are two points i realized disassembling the engine. engine has a K2 head, cam chain sprocket seems to be from a F2, as both 7mm screws seem to be from a F2. i do have two versions of these 7mm screws: one pair is 11mm long, the other one is 12mm and is shouldered. in my engine i had the 12mm.
the camshaft does have axial play. you will find a position where the camshaft rotates free. pushing the camshaft to the other side, the thread of the screws touched the head and milled a very small amount of aluminium from the head (this spot can be seen near the round rubber sealing of cyl 2). this continuous load may have caused the failure.
second, my self made slots in the cam sprocket are a little bit too long, more than necessary. this puts unnecessary loads to the threads of the cam tab.

now i have shortened the 12mm screws, cause i will go for the shouldered ones.

yes, the elf-honda is heaven.

i have seen this bike in the 80ies(?) racing the endurance championship in austria. driver? maybe ron haslam, raymond roche?
however the bike did not win, it was always good for third place (competing against all the factory bikes!).

i was happy to see this technical wonder again (however static display).
