ahhhm,...why we did not meet at Spa?
Great event, but I have to contradict. I never have seen so many Laverdas out there.

some pics, Piero Laverda, Dholdas....

At the old VIP pits I saw a very unique 750. Is it a Rob North framed CB750?

today i did a test.
you know, i "repaired" a stock cam (with a broken tab) by tig welding.
today i did the "hammer test" and broke the welded tab off of the camshaft. not the repair broke, but the tab near the shaft. this seems to be a good sign, the repair is stiffer than the stock one..

in front the test cam, in the background the repaired racing one.

knowing that there are undercut gears, i found another way to optimize the "popping out of 4th gear" issue:
as can seen in the first picture, the trany is in 4th gear and gear 4 and 3 are not engaged all the way (despite a new shifting fork). i decided to grind 0.5mm off of the washer between gear 4 and 3 and to add a 0.5mm washer between gear 4 and 1. this locates the 4th gear wheel 0.5mm to the right side giving more secure power transmission.

Hey nippon,

Looks like everyone here has trouble finding eachother at Spa, kept looking for you and Ted all weekend but to no availle.
Yes this is a Rob North framed Honda as raced by Joey Dunlop R.I.P at the Isle of Man, I think it was '76 or '77.
There were some beautiful bikes out there, but loved the sound of the MV 'hauling' the most. Also loved to see the special Aero '74 bike with the big seat and the wings on the fairing.
Big shame we did not meet. :'( :'(

Cheers, Rob

Hi voxonda,
I don't wanna hijack mec's thread again, but for next year we need a professional event manager for a meeting in Spa.
Obviously, we are not able to do it by ourself.  ;)

Mec,

While you are waiting can you fill us in (again probably) on the alternator?

some comments on the alternator:

i bought the complete set (magnesium alternator cover, alternator and rotor) from a swiss dealer (rfaeh1@bluewin.ch).
it took me one day to make fit the alternator coil to the cover. in addition to this the rotor had a 20mm hole which had to be adapted to the crankshaft cone.

rectifier/regulator is type 2 from http://www.elektronik-sachse.de/

this type is adjustable so that i can choose the voltage for my 14.4V LiFePo accus.

Hei Mec

Two guys from my club with a CB500 are currently neck to neck with Piero Laverda (and his 500 twin ) in the italian classic endurance championship. They won the other weekend in Rijeka, the Laverda was second in the 500 class.

If I am not mistaken, Spa has only one open class, not much chances with a small 500 right?

hi tg,

yes, in endurance there was only one open class.
but the results i have seen, a sohc 750 F2 (far east team, probably 820?) finished 19th. a good running cb 500 could do the same.

I'd call the post office and have them stuff your parts in a bottle and chuck it in the sea. At least that way you'll have a fighting chance...

This is a fantastic thread, by the way, I'm learning a ton just reading through it. Keep it coming...

Hei Mec

Thanks for the link to the results!

If a CB750 ended up so low, I am afraid that a CB500 wouldnt have reached the minimum to qualify, I am afraid....

Nice to see that Mr. Ifrah's Guzzi (motobel) kicked everybody's ass, Z1, GS1000 and big SOHCS too! Even Stephan Mertens of Team Bike!

I race a CB500 but am very much a guzzista at heart...... makes me want to turn my LM III into a racer too, even if I have all the pieces for a full original restoration.

I've seen you are into guzzi's too. know this site? http://www.animaguzzista.com

not much chance on a 500 at spa im afraid , but you never know the best lap in the 4h race was nearly 4 seconds slower than the icgp race and that was on a 350 [ a 74 hp light 2 stroke mind ]
great event to watch though , you cannot believe how loud it is in that covered grandstand on the old start line!

We sat there for a while on Saturday morning before deciding that we'd either have to go back to the hotel for our earplugs or move.  We moved to the paddock.

Simon, tz350's are known giant killers, so am not surprised at all.

In the vintage class i race in italy we have a separate classifications for the two strokes, no production based 500 four stroke (like my CB500F) could ever stay with a 350 two stroke. Tha fastest CB500F rider here is a good 2-4 seconds slower than the best TZ350 riders in most tracks and he is one mean rider and top tuner.

hi turboguzzi  , due to old age and stupidity i had forgotten that it rained after the icgp race . in the dry the times are very similar . its a pity spa clashed with the classic club meeting at donington or we would have seen a few more fast tzs    i raced a 500 laverda for a couple of years as well as my tzs and there was no comparison at all the tz was much much quicker !!!

Yes I had to make do with Donington too  ;) I will perhaps make it to Spa one day. It was good seeing and hearing a pack of TZ's again though but the best sound of the day was Lea Gourlay on the Paton.

Lea was here in italy too and proceeded to destroy the locals,

great rider, but form what I hear, those who are up against those patons in IHRO are getting upset, the 4 valve version is supposed to have more than 70 hp..... no manx or G50 can keep up with them.
