Cam chain?
« on: September 30, 2005, 11:07:42 AM »
Hi, I'm looking at buying a bike, and the guy says that the cam chain broke. He's selling it really cheap, and besides the cam chain, it's a beautiful bike! I'm wondering how hard it is to replace that chain?

depends on the type of bike. Let us know what it is then we can tell you.

Never replaced a cam chain, so I won't speak to that, the bigger question is what other damage may have been caused by the cam chain breaking.  Did the valves bang against the pistions, did the chain double back on itself in the lower end and get chewed by the main shaft...lots of bad stuff can happen...

On any SOHC4 the cam chain breaking will cause quite a bit of expensive damage if the engine is running. You can make a sure bet that it was running when the chain broke.
If it was idling, it may just be a bent valve or two. If it was revved up, there'll be several ruined valves and probably major piston damage and even con rods broken. The chain itself will end up somewhere and can cause a lot of damage if it goes to an unlucky place.
