Show off your slick removable mount for a bench vise
« on: January 03, 2009, 09:16:04 PM »
So I finally went out today and got a bench vise.  It was a ( cheap I think) 5" Wilton for $53 at Home Depot.  I really could have used a vise many many times so here it is finally.  I don't have that much space so I cannot permanently mount it on my workbench which I need to have wide open and flat sometimes too.  I am sure I am not the only guy with this problem.

Please post your pics and descriptions of how you made your vise removable so I can steal your ideas! :)

Sorry, I dont have any pics (my camera took a dump last night), but I have made and adaptor for mounting stuff (band saw, vise, electric motor) to the end of my lathe ways (slides). Its very simular to the way a scope get mounted on a rifle(but more secure). You would need to mount a "receiver" and bolt it to on your table and make the clamp part for the bottom of your vise.
It would probably be easier to mount the vise to the table and unbolt it when the full bench is needed.

At my last house I welded together a 12"x12" .25" plate and put a sleeve mounted on it and made a post for the vise. I mounted it on the concrete in the center of the floor so I could have a good mount in the center of the garage with plenty of room. A vise in supposed to be rock solid, mine would move around a tad even though it had a 1/2" pin holding it in the sleeve. Sorry no pics but I hope this maybe is an idea for you.

p.s. Your bench looks almost as cluttered as mine, that's why I liked it in the center of the floor.
