My cb550 cafe/flatrack racer LOTS of pics
« on: August 17, 2008, 07:03:02 AM »
I got this bike for a pretty good deal as a frame, engine, and box of parts.  Seems i get alot of my projects this way for some reason.  This is the first real motorcycle i've built, im ususally into cars.  I found it significantly easier and much more enjoyable to build a bike instead of a car.  It came with drag bars, and a harley rim and spoke kit for the back, i liked the look of it then and decided to go with kind of a flat track look.

Frame and engine painted, decided to go with stock tank rather than a custom chopper looking fiberglass one that came with the bike.  The seat is from caferacerseats.com or something along those lines.

Shaved the emblems off the tank, still have to wetsand and repaint

I still have to make a little plate for the back part of the tank that meets the seat and tig it in there.  The aftermarket seat does not have the little flap that comes up and covers the hole in the stock tank.

Custom brake barrel i made at work, the hub was missing the stock one.  I made it out of stainless with a little sholder so it wouldnt fall right through.  Kinda pointless, but i enjoy little details.

with the brakes hooked up i was able to take it for a test ride.

im still waiting to get it back from being covered in tan leather with black stiching, but its pretty much done.  I dont know if the little bullet taillights will stay there.

The winters project pics...

which leaves me with a few questions, how much extra power does the stock charging circut have?  Im looking to run an electric fuel pump and an oil pump if possible.

looking for a larger main jet, read more here: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=39198.0

thanks for the help, the next size up from 100 is a 115 though...  Does that seem like it would be way too much for me?  I was thinking of getting 105s and 110s

been too busy riding to update the pics.  My dads friends owns a business building limosines, i got him to cover my seat in real nice tan leather and about a 1/2" of foam.  Its done for the rest of the season, over the winter i hope to put a sportbike front end on and rebuild the engine.

Did you happen to buy this bike from a member of this forum? It looks a lot like trav72s project..

Have you considered building a "Street Tracker"? I think a 4 cyl done right would look very nice and clean.

I did buy it as an uncompleted project from trav, saw it on craigslist actually. He sent me here for info about these bikes

It is a 16" harley rim with custom spokes that lace to a Honda hub

I'm working on an led tail light now that wraps around underneath the point in the back.

That seat looks just like the ones that this guy up in Vancouver, Washington is making - any chance you got it from him?  He advertises it as a 2 piece cafe seat.  I always see them posted on the Portland Craigslist.  Cool looking bike BTW, Engine  is nice and shiny ;D

I got the seat off ebay, but it was listed as a two piece set.

Trav seems to be a well respected guy

love what you have done.could i trouble you for the size of tire you are running in the rear as i want to put on something similar on my 78 CB550k for a wider footprint and beefier look .i would like to run a 130 in the back but only have 1.85x18 rim you think i could get away with it? what mods did you have to make? love the powder coated rims i am dismantling mine currently so that i can powdercoat everything except the spoke tensioners which will be chrome. Cheers and happy holidays.

id like to know where to get the spokes for the 16 rear. I just bought a 550 and it has a 16" rear but its a little rusty. I think i could clean up the  rim but the spokes ill most likely have to replace and dont know where to get them since they are not stock.

you can get the stainless spokes on ebay they're the same for the cb450 500 550 750.
about $30.00 or so shipped.

you're gonna wanna give them a good polish first, they're just rough finished.
everything I say is pure speculation and
I have no idea what I'm talking about  ._.
