draining gas tank?
« on: January 04, 2009, 04:16:05 PM »
I've searched for about 30-40 min without finding anything... Just wanted to know if there is a trick to completely draining a gas tank?  I've sloshed and moved the tank around everywhich way, upside down included, but it seems like there is still a 1/4 gallon still in the tank.  I completely removed the petcock and still some gas is in the tank.  Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Not really.  You've just got to get the gas across the hump.  Rotate the tank so that you've collected it all in the petcock side.  you could probably stand it up vertically and use a siphon as well (or a nail :D)

I got a siphon rig at the auto parts store, and fastened the hose to a straightened clothes hanger so that I could direct it to the lowest point.

Never had any problems with doing it myself, but if you poured in a bit of alcohol and swished it about and then drained the rest should evaporate?

I just did that last week, and the best way I could find was to take the tank all the way off and dump it out through the filler hole.  There will always be a couple of teaspoons of gas left behind, but that could be soaked up with a rag, or you could just leave the cap off so allow it to dry out.

Steve F - I tried the dumping from the filler cap, which is how most of the gas came out.  Is there something I'm missing?  Reserve tank that I'm not accessing due to taking my entire petcock off?

Hold it uipside down, shake it till you get no more gas out, then while holding it upside down stuff a couple paper towels in the filler cap and work them aroubd the filler bung with your fingers. Might have to do this a couple of times, but you can get it dry as a bone.

The so-called "reserve" is obtained by the little tube that sticks up from the pet cock.  The reserve part of the petcock gets the fuel by draining the fuel all the way to the bottom of the tank, whereas the normal petcock setting draws fuel through a tube that's about 1-1/2" from the bottom.
