Fork issue
« on: January 02, 2009, 06:33:38 PM »
Any tricks to removing the bottom bolt for the fork? 78 750F

I am having one hell of a time trying to get this thing out. I have almost stripped it completely with an allen key, hex key, whatever you would like to call it. I am trying to disassemble my forks. I have used heat as well.... any other suggestions welcome. I may have to get ahold of an air compressor and impact gun with a 1/2" attachment for an allen key socket. The one fork came apart no problem the one I am working on now.... not so much. >:(

Some times there so stuck you need an impact wrench. I have used my air one at times. If you strip one it will need to be drilled out. just take the head off and the fork will slide down then you can pull the bolt out.

I was thinking about drilling it out but I would prefer not to. I am thinking about hammering a bigger size allen key socket in there and using an impact driver set on kill....

???? broomstick trick you say?

I have not taken the inner spring out yet. So it is not spinning while I turn, just stuck.

also if you can have someone pull as hard as they can to tighten up the inner tube. But thats only if the bolt is spinning the insides.

Don't have a 750 but if all else fails drill a small hole into the side of the bolt and throw a screw into it, this will give your wrench or stilson something to chew on.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

find a broomstick with a tapered end , take the spring out . put the tapered end down in the fork , to brace the dampener

put the stick in a vice or have someone hold it

thats the broomstick trick, but if your stripping the hex key it gotta be seized up

I fashioned a steel rod to replace the broomstick idea.  One end is tapered and the other end has a slot cut in it to mate with the roll pin inside some fork sliders.  I mount it in a vice and have a go.  The steel helps transfer any force I am applying to the allen bolt rather than absorbing it.  Wood is a tremendous dampener.  Forks are a smelly icky job.

i made a similar contraption , works like a charm... but it works no better then the broomstick i've found it just has a handle

Worked for me!
Used a 5/16" allen wrench IIRC.

I cut off an 8mm allen wrench, leaving a long 8mm shaft. I put that into an 8mm socket and put the socket on my impact driver. The bolt was toast, but it came out.
