Fuel filter line, any chance it will melt?
« on: September 30, 2005, 02:38:31 PM »
So the two fuel filter hoses/tubes coming from my petcock,  they rest against my engine. i just happened to feel how hot the engine was underneath one of the tubes the other day, hot enough to easily melt plastic. Are the fuel filter tubes made out of some sort of non burnable plastic, cause normal plastic would have melted by now, and i can only imagine how much that would suck if a hole burned through one of these tubes while you were driving down the road (gasoline spewing everywhere). If its not suppse to rest against the engine, how do you keep it up and away?

Well you ahd a 78k before so you might remember this.  I put one on and the line from the carbs to the filter are about 2 inches long, then about 3 inches from filter to tank.

Now you have a 500/550, i cant remember which. Do you have a long fuel line on it? If you do, maybe taking out some length would help.

Again though I do not know where the inlet and petcock sit.

i have a 74 550, the dude before me put them on. Yeah i guess they are too long. So they are not suppose to rest against the engine?

I would not think so. Look at it this way, you have GAS going through that little bit of plastic :o

Check it out cause I would think that the line should be shorter, besides loops like that may affect your flow and it is best to have cool gas or at least cooler gas going into your carbs.

If they're made of fuel line, like the stuff at the auto parts store, you're OK. I mean, it's probably better if they don't touch the intakes, but it's not a big deal. The rubber is high-temp, and the temp isn't nearly high enough to touch off gas.

I think he meant the fins of the engine, at least that is what I was thinking. If it touches the carbs or airbox then that is fine. I was thinking of direct engine contact. The plastic used is not always a high temp and thats where the trouble might come in.

I took a pic of where the fuel line sits, cause i dont know the technical terms for where its at. That area under it gets hotter than hell, but this looks like the type of plastic made for high temps? If someone could confirm this set up is okay, id really appreciate it ive been worried my bikes gonna explode if it melts a hole in the tubes.

They are too long. I woud just shorten them to remove the loops and excess that causes it to touch anything before the connection point. Maybe someone with a parts list for your bike can give you the correct length(s) and don't forget to compensate for the length of the in-line filters.

I have them routed the same way and they don`t touch the engine, hoses are way too long.Looks like you`ve got the semi clear plastic hoses on there.
GET RID OF THEM. They`re junk because they will harden with age and wiil break on you when changing inline filters.
Get real strengthened rubber fuel hosing that`s made to withstand fuel contact and high heat.
