What Are Your Thoughts On This Subject?
« on: January 04, 2009, 09:26:10 AM »

Found this a interesting piece over on the hondatwins.net :

a little info for any yahoo group members

Date: Saturday, January 3, 2009, 12:22 AM

It seems to be an annual opt out program so you need to opt out on
each computer you access Yahoo groups on and remember to do it every
year.

If you belong to ANY Yahoo Groups - be aware that Yahoo uses "Web
Beacons" to track every Yahoo Group user. It's similar to cookies,
but allows Yahoo to record every website and every group you visit,
even when you're not connected to Yahoo. Look at their updated
privacy statement at:

http://info. yahoo.com/ privacy/us/ yahoo/details. html

About half-way down the page, in the section on *cookies*, you will
see a link that says *WEB BEACONS*.

Click on the phrase "Web Beacons." On the page that opens, on the
left find a box entitled "Opt-Out."

In that section find "opt-out of interest-matched advertising" link
that will let you "opt-out" of their snooping. Click it and then
click the opt-out button on the next page.

Note that Yahoo's invasion of your privacy - and your ability to opt-
out of it - is not user-specific. It is MACHINE specific. That means
you will have to opt-out on every computer (and browser) you use.

Please forward this to your other groups.

Sadly it's just another way of advertising...

And all advertising is... is information gathering about a specific (plural and singular) demographic.

Chock one up to big business for trying their best.

Next thing you know they'll be beaming ads into our dreams. ;) ;D 8)

Fine line between privacy infringement rights and collecting demographic data. How deeply buried the opt out clauses are hidden should let you know which is which. Someone can pitch to me all they want as long as it in my face. When they are looking over my shoulder - then that's a different story.

Nothing illegal about looking last time I checked.

What I do with what I saw is what's illegal.

I'm not defending... but seriously people have fought this kind of crap with all kinds of money and support and still haven't made a dent. Thank your neighborhood corporate lawyer for that.

Agreed. An no one can legislate morality and decency which is antithema to big business. Sales at all costs. Any business that would gut and destroy a nation to provide goods to another is well beyond worrying over being a peeping Tom. And as you say - its legal maybe not ethical, but then there are no legal parameters for conscience.

Love to go for a blast and beers. But right now we're up to our nether regions in that cursed white stuff  - and not the type you can make a fortune off of by selling in gram lots.
