Am I Nuts?
« on: December 18, 2008, 10:55:02 PM »
So I bought this honda XL250 plus a parts bike for 250 bucks. Now I'm going to ride it all winter. I just got the tyres back from the local bike shop today and threw in around 350 studs, check it out.

I got 'chased' for several miles in a blizzard by a police Landrover at up to 45mph (all posted at 30mph)
Didn't get a ticket because I was on a Honda S90 and the signs were invisible  ;D
Seems like a fun thing to do

I rode it for a couple of days before it crapped out on me. I don't quite think I'll be trying to outrun cops but I am anticipating getting pulled over often, I'm a cop magnet and I'm sure they will find a way to harass me about being out in the snow on a bike! I hate cops.

I'm waiting for parts right now and hope to be back on the road soon.

Just got done dismantling the motor. The bottom end is fine except for the massive amounts of piston shavings.
the guy that had this bike before me was supposed to be a mechanic, But I wouldn't let him fix a sandwitch. piston on backward. home made accelerator pump using silicon form a gasket. the knock was the intake valves hitting the pistons! Checked the valves and luckily they are still good.

Its a blast!!!!!!! ;D ;D

I had an old Suzuki 650 dual purpose that I rode everyday of the year for a couple of years.

Oddly enough they don't like sub zero weather.

Never had studs though. Make me feel like a moron why don't you. Guess that'd be why it was always like riding a dirt tracker then??

lol more power to you my man!!!!

If anyone decides to go the studded rout. they sell them at your local dirt bike shop. I cant take credit for the idea, my dad used to race enduro in the winter when I was a kid. He used sheet metal screws, I just happend to find the hardend AMA approved version of them. It was kinda hard starting my bike but I think now that the piston will be on the right way and the valves aren't tickling it, it should start fairly easily I hope.

if you run studs on the road, dont expect them to be great for iceracing.

You can get great traction on ice, my 750 would easily do a wheely, but we would push or carry it over dirt or pavement..

You still got snow where you are?

Had rain the last couple of days and it's all melted away.

Let me know how it goes down the road!!

Once the snow hits here it stays until April or may!
on occasion we get the "January thaw" usually we have a good 12 inches all winter.
