clutch cable path

I've broke another clutch cable on a 77 550f.  2nd cable this year.  Must be cheap cables or maybe I use it to much, or possibly I don't maintain it enough.  I've been purchasing these cables through Honda.  Now to my question......I've looked through the archieves and not found anything on point....how does the cable travel from the handlebar down to where it attaches at the trannie?  Or does it even make any difference?  The path of least resistance?  I've fed the cable up along the right side of the bike and then crossing in front of the handlebars.  Studying the area,  it looks as though it could cross from the right side of the bike to the left side of the bike through the opening where the coils are positioned.  Any ideas?

Well my 750 goes down the bar then down and is strapped to the frame and goes to the clutch.  Maybe try an aftermarket cable. I did that with my choke and the new cable is better than oem. The sheath is adjustable to fine tune the linkage, unlike the oem.

yah, I was actually thinking when I was installing the new cable that maybe I'd just machine a "flipper thing" you could just reach down and control the clutch with your right hand.  Kind of like you could pertend that you had an old Harley that shifted by a lever down low but instead a Honda that you were clutchen!
