can i soak an entire engine in kerosene?
« on: January 06, 2009, 04:33:11 PM »
i have this '69 cb160 with a seized engine and my step dad told me to try soaking the engine in kerosene.
can that be done? if so should i turn it upside down in the kerosene to keep the transmission and the starter
motor out of it all?
any info would be great

try marvel mystery oil first, I have seen it free up a lot of frozen parts and a few real stuck motors!
k8 project, a long way from done.....

it it works, why change? :)  besides, if you get kerosene some places you might be hurting things (like you are worried about the tranny) but marvel really shouldn't hurt anything.  just dump the stuff in the cylinders and see what happens. worth a shot, no? hell of a lot easier too :)

If it's rusted bores, it seems kinda drastic to soak the whole engine when all you want is to get the solvent in the cyilnder bores which can be done easily via the spark plug holes.  Further, putting the engine upside down in solvent is not using gravity to get the solvent where you want it.  If its more than this that is seized up, then the motor is a write off.

i washed an entire bottom end of a cb350T in my parts washer. it wasn't soaked (i put the brush in the top of the case and let if flow for several hours though), but but got rinsed pretty well with parts washing fluid. my parts washer always has a little residual oil which probably helped prevent any surface rusting in the gearbox. i'd say if you do try soaking it, mist the inside with some kind of light oil immediately after drying it.

on the other hand, it's not that hard to split the cases on a 160...
