My "new" CB750 with goodies:)
« on: January 06, 2009, 08:56:37 PM »
While searching craigslist I found this sweet CB750 in Los Angeles...My wife packed up the kids, we drove to L.A. 6 hrs, test ride, bought it, rented a UHAUL box truck and drove it back 6 hrs same day. I have a great wife!!! I was planning on riding the bike back that night while my wife drove our car, but I was "convinced" that it was wiser to not ride a 34 year old bike that I am not familiar with 350 miles.

Crappy pics (taken from my phone) of my new bike, 1975. Has a Yosh 900cc big bore kit, 4-1 header, Guillari cafe seat, Raask rearsets, clubmans.

I think it needs turn signals and speedo/odo before I can register it. (Out of state title, needs inspected). Want to get rid of the bullet brake lights and put a proper brake light in the middle. Also needs tuning: falls on it's face with 1/2 to full throttle in mid to upper rpms. Also, idles too high once it warms up. Handles good though and it looks perfect! Ghetto painted rims/spokes, faded tank, no fender (I know, I know...needs a brace), wonderfully worn cafe seat with a great stance ;D

In snowy Salt Lake City for work this week, so all I can do is dream about roaring exaust and nice sweepers back in Arizona :)

Enjoy!

Very nice. You might want to check the engine number and frame numbers as the front end looks like a 1972 or earlier (no rainguard on the front brake was pre-72). I cant tell from the photo but the shifter cover may not have the gears stamped on the case (another pre-72 sign).

Thanks for the pics! Love the seat (I have one myself :-D).

cheers

Andy, I have no rain guard either. I took it off. Looks better without it and I have not noticed any difference in braking. Maybe a little extra water in the rain but when you are getting soaked, like it matters! :D

I would strip the tank and paint it something more in like with the rest of the bike. It kinda stands out. I like the tires and the seat.

I actually like the tank. It is fading on top, but it adds to the patina ;)

Won't be too disappointed because I don't feel it has the power a 900 should have and told the previous owner that. He looked very hurt :'( The owner previous to him supposedly did the 900.

Thanks for the heads up! I just got back into Phoenix from Salt Lake, so hopefully I will get a chance to inspect it further this weekend. A bit of an impulse buy, but I like the looks, handles well, and has a lot of potential.

The bike pretty much has everything there. Just clean, polish and do some painting and that bike will be really nice.

Well done finding a great wife. My wife and I drove 3 hours one way to pick up my bike a few months ago. Great stuff.

Found a couple simple issues. Clear fuel line that is leaking at most of the junctions, plus doesn't completely run downhill from petcock. Oil leak from? I think the oil pressure gauge? or possibly from the vertical bolts on the bottom of engine below the oil gauge.

Hopefully, I get a chance to mess with it this weekend. Itching to run the piss out of it ;D

Anyone know if I need an odometer/speedometer, turn signals, emissions tested to register my bike in Arizona (Goodyear)?

Also, idles too high once it warms up.
I had to learn to run the idle up when cold, then back down when it warmed.
My left hand now automatically finds the idle speed screw along with the choke lever.

Call your auto club, if you're a member.  They'll usually do vehicle registration services and tell you what's involved, with much less hassle than DMV.

Good catch. It had to be killing you to haul it home. Canyon knee dragger perhaps?! I hope you won't be disappointed with the engine guts if it isn't a 900. I don't believe Yoshimura ever made a 900 kit. There were quite a few others such as Henry Abe, RC, Wiseco, Arias, etc.
Correct Jerry. Yoshimura felt 811 or 812 cc was the limit in regard to reliability.

754 is right. Engine is correct according to the numbers I found in the online service manuals. Engine number also matches title. You may be correct about the front end. Which I will try to remember to keep in mind if I ever need replace parts.

Busy yesterday. Replaced the bullet tails. I moved the rear fender out a bit for more room to fit the single light. Replaced some shoddy wiring and soldered some unsoldered connections. Replaced leaking clear fuel line with black and rerouted line. PO had the #3 carb inlet pointed down with the line running below the carbs. Still hesitates with mid to full throttle. Also, several pop, pops on deceleration. Haven't pulled the plugs yet. Also, need to check for leaks on carb rubbers. Removed the oil pressure gauge, cleaned it up, added a gasket and reinstalled. No more oil puddles!

Unfortunately, I now noticed the bike puts out some white smoke on acceleration and just free revving in neutral.

My helper...

Apparently, I am not allowed to work on my bike in the apartment parking lot anymore ::) I either need to find a decent priced mechanic in the area or find someone with a garage I can use. Anyone in Phoenix area know of a good shop?
