What is this 78 CB550K worth?
« on: January 08, 2009, 12:26:37 PM »
Still looking to get my project bike and found this locally:

http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/mcy/983335740.html
(price is in Canadian dollars)

I haven't been able to see it in person yet but over the phone the seller mentioned the following things:

Rusty dented exhaust
Some rust on the wheels
Small crack on headlights
One of the cooling fins is bent
Battery needs recharge or replacement
55,000km

What would be a fair offer for this?

Thanks!

Canadian Dollars!?  :o  that's almost like REAL money! ;D

Guess it all depends on how badly you want it, how badly he wants to off load it, and how hard it is to find a better deal in our area.

If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

I bought this 78 750 with 48,000km here on the Rock for 1200.00 in Oct 0f 2007.

This is the night I bought her and she came with shield and bags. :o :o

I would off not more than 800.00

Just my .02  ;)

That price seems high

My first 78 550k (bought Oct 07) cost me $100 with ownership and around $600 for parts,no motor work......this years project(pic) 78 550K was $150 with ownership ..low priced ones are out there,I found my projects and parts bikes on Kijiji...I'm in Ontario around Toronto
1978 cb 550k......stock,my first re-build

"Battery needs recharged" that could be a sign the charging system is shot. take a volt meter with you set @20V and place the leads (black/red) to the -/+ sides of the battery while it's running and see what it reads. If it's below 12.5V I would knock him waaaaay down of price. The volts should also increase as the you rev the bike (to a point). I purchased a 77 550K a few years back and the guy was asking $800 for it non running, I picked it up for $400 and with about $200 in tires plus $80 in Misc parts, I rode it for 2 years before I sold it.

That's way too much. I've had five late 70's/early 80's Jap bikes, and I've never paid more than $800. None of them ever had any problem other than dirty carbs. You might have to look for a couple of months, but you should find something. I personally, wouldn't pay more than $400-500 USD for it. By the time you get it fixed up, you may have more in it than something else requiring far less work. I just paid $800 for a 1978 750F that I found on Craigslist. Nothing wrong but dirty carbs, old tires, and a brake that needed bled.

I picked up a 74 CB550 for 350 CDN it needs a new chain and the carbs need to be serviced. It runs and needed a new battery.

I think the advertised $750
