too late to turn back
« on: January 08, 2009, 12:46:24 PM »
started to disassemble my 74 cb750
found out the key would not work for the seat or ignition
bought it non running so thats no surprise
got the carbs off in one piece even though the manual said to disassemble the throttle assembly
can i rebuild the carbs as a assembly or do i have to take them all apart?
i'm thinking they will have to be disassembled
tank and side panels came off ok
the side panels are in really good shape
the exhaust is original and came off easy
they are in good shape except for some scrapes on the bottom of the right side
will replace with headers anyway
i heard original exhaust are worth some money, is that true?
this should be fun because it's just me and a manual thats doing all the work
thats it for now, will pull the pack tomorrow
want to tear it all down and rebuild it
by the way found out the last owner used a bolt instead of a fuse
maybe that why it wasn't running anymore

Ah fond memories...

I cleaned, powder coated & reinstalled seat lock

Mine ran, not so great but put 1500 miles on it before I tore it down

My K6 carbs came off in one piece, then taken down to parts cleaned & reassembled, REPLACE the float bowl gaskets..

Found a nice set of side covers to have painted with my spare tank so I can keep a fresh tank and covers for showing off.

Pipes not rusted through are worth a few $$. I paid 300 plus 60 shipping for mine, one of the four was scrap!

Electrical protection is important, amazing how careless some people are, there is a reason fuses blow! Sometimes the reason is transient.  My K6 still has the spares under the fuse cover!

I hope you acquire as many stories as I did in my restore!

pulled the engine yesterday
again the manual did not tell the whole story
taking pics so i'll remember how it goes back
going to pull the heads and check the engine
i was surprised to see how clean the carbs were
how do you get the engine to shine like new again?
what kind of paint do you use for the gas tank?

I have had good luck cleaning the engine parts with a brush that look like a toothbrush, but with brass bristles, fine steel wool(or brass or copper if youcan find them), fine sandpaper if necessary, flitz or other polish.

Combinations of above + elbow grease work wonders..

=====================================

Are you asking if the carbs have to come off the rack, to get cleaned or?.. if they look clean try to check the idle jets.

you may have some nasty electrical problems if there was a bolt replacing a fuse, hope not.

You might be able to trade exhaust, but I would try to keep them, I threw out a few sets after I kept them10 + years, now I can NEVER find them around here..

good luck.. what manual are you using? & bag or label your parts as they come off..

it's a clymer manual
not much impressed now that i'm using it more on difficult jobs
not bagging many parts
always screw them back in the holes they came out of
