what happened???
« on: October 01, 2005, 09:19:54 PM »
Well its been a while since I have added a post to the board so here goes...

Last week on Saturday September, 24th at 11:10 am eastern

I lost controll of my 650 and crashed.

I was in a turn and for some reason my rear tire locked up, and as quick
as a flash, i was in a skid and then i hit the ground.
the bike threw me and lucky for me there was no guardrail or any trees on the side of the road.
only grass n weeds. the impact was so fast that i still dont quite remember the whole thing.
i just remember standing up afterwards and trying to remember "where" i was.

lucky for me i had my cell phone and i called a friend of mine who came to my aid.
He was able to ride my 650 back home for me while i followed in the car.

My hole right side hurting but not bloody, and yes i was wearing my 1/2 helmet.
my right arm has taken the brunt of the impact and hurts like hell but is getting better.

i have not gone to the Doctor i dont feel its nessissary at this time.

I have taken photos of the scene of the crash and also my bike.

i am truly fortunate that i walked away from this.
it could have been much much worse.

so i guess now i have my winter project.

Sorry about your downer. Sounds like you were pretty lucky though. Have you been able to determine what caused the wheel lock-up? Good luck with the rest of your recovery.

I looked over the site of the crash a couple times now, and there really wasnt anything
that told me a reason why the tire locked up like that.

its not like i was going real fast either

maybe 25mph...

the skid was like hitting oil with the rear tire only. it came right out from behind me.
once the tire touched the edge of the road, the bike just slammed down on its right side.

the front tire diddnt skid and i had the front wheel turned hard right. so when i hit the ground
the handelbar bent into the tank and the mirror impacted my arm.

i got a bunch of deep scratches on my helmet so im real glad i was wearing it.

Wow!!! Man, I'm glad you can tell the tale. This kind of things is what we always think that only happen to others, and when they happen, makes us realize how many things in life we don't want to miss.

If there was no oil stain on the road then it's a very strange thing. At 25 mph seems like you were cruising more than hammering, so chances that the rear wheel skid because of too much torque are slight. Was there sand on the road? It's very treacherous, difficult to spot but your grip turns to almost 0 in just a few inches.

Glad you are OK. I'm so sorry that you had to crash the day of my 34th birthday... :-\

Bad luck, sorry to hear about your accident, hope you and your bike get better soon. So, is the rear wheel still locked?

Could it be that your engine seized?

happy birthday Raul!

the engine is just fine and as far as the condition of the road, it was sand free and dry.

the rear wheel is ok and has free motion

i inspected the breaks and there is no issues there either.

im still kinda scratching my head on this one

Glad to hear you weren't hurt. The bike is repairable. And like you said, you now have a winter project - one you really didn't need or want.

Glad to hear you're okay and that the bike is repairable. Strange what happened. Is it possible that you had your foot slightly on the pedal? This might cause the brake to heat up, expand and engage? Just guessing here.

Jim, is the rear brake on the 650 the drum type? Sometimes brake shoes can lock up due to linings wearing thin. As the shoes wear, the actuator cam must rotate farther before the shoes contact the drum. The actuator cam can eventually get to a point where it will max out "over center" and hold the shoes against the drum even after the pedal has been released. Have the brakes been adjusted to compensate for a lot of wear in the past? Are they the O.E.? This is just a guess of course, I learned this lesson many years ago on an SL 350 I had, but the results weren't as bad as yours. Get well soon and hope you find the culprit.

I had a similar problem with a rear brake drum on a H100 in my learning to drive days (Still learning bye the way). Part of the shoe lining actually came off and jammed inside the drum. I was on a straight and doing less than 30 in morning rush hour (why do they call it rush hour in the cities when you crawl along at 15 mph) so it slowed the bike suddenly. It was obvious the brake was jammed once i put the bike on the centre stand and in neutral. Took out the offending piece of rougue lining and carried on to the bike shop very gingerly with only the front break. New shoes and roberts your fathers brother, sorted. My first lesson in routine maintenance as the lining wasn't fawlty just over worn I reckon.

I've taken the rear wheel off and from what i can tell...

theres nuthing wrong with it.

infact, the break shoes have a lil more than 3/16 Inch of pad left on them.

im gonna have to conceit to it being "operator error"

god i hate to admit that.

I just said I'd throw this in...just goes to show ...even the best....

"I will have a lasting memory of him as such a nice guy with a great sense of humour. He was more than a racer, he was a genuine and popular human being like Joey Dunlop," added Ray.

Enniskillen rider Richard Britton was killed in an accident in the 250cc race at the Ballybunion road races last weekend.

Eyewitness accounts suggest that Britton's bike seized, as he raised his hand from the clutch lever to signal his retirement from the race, the back wheel probably spun out of control fatally throwing him from his bike.

"It was a freak accident, he wasn't even going fast when it happened," according to photographer Stephen Davison.

Paul.

Glad to hear you are merely sore and not severely busted up.  Sorry about the bike too.  Hope everything turns out okay.

Jim, sooooo glad you are OK!

Yes, it makes you think doesn't it.  I had a spill in August (see my post about "testimonial to engine guards and helmets") and I'm STILL trying to figure out what happened!

And yes, I noticed that on the third day after the fall, I was noticing everything around me with a MUCH greater appreciation, as that would have been the day for MY funeral!  I also realised that its not just me I need to think about, it's my Dear Hubby, 3 kiddos, future grandkiddos, dog, parents, etc... really makes you think!

So.....life is good, and meant to be lived.

Like others have said-get back on that horse and ride it!  But keep that helmet on!

Linda

.................Tragic about Britton - but when its your time, nothings going to stop it!

Jim, you say you hate to admit it might have been your own fault!  ADMIT NOTHING TILL YOU HAVE SPOKEN TO A LAWYER. You might be sued by yourself.
