75 cb750k cafe project begins 2/25 new pics

     Here goes! Been looking at a 750 for about 18 months and then finally pulled the trigger back in september. Found it on craigslist has about 27000 miles on it, runs great just needs some tuning on the carbs, exterior of bike looks pretty crappy but all I wanted was one that ran well. I paid $800 for it.
     Never even ridden a bike before and I bought it, had to have my brother ride it home for me. We stopped off in a parking lot on the way home and got my first lesson. After about 5 minutes of riding I developed a fear for leaves that only a biker would understand. Grew some balls and went tearing across the parking lot, the sound of the drag pipes echoing against the buildings, the crisp Autumn air pushing against me, and the adrenaline rush no car has ever given me, all confirmed the reason for my purchase and the love of this bike I'd only known for 40 minutes. Looked down and I was going 25, scared #$%*less but having a blast.
     Thanks to the hours of research on this site, to the lament of my girlfriend, I have some great ideas about fixing her up. Also thanks to the economy and my recent layoff I now have the time. She runs great so I dont want to crack her open, maybe just some head work, and new valves and springs, maybe a cam if i get cocky. Repainting everything, motor, frame, tank, everything. Cafe single seat, dual front breaks, spoke rims, wrap the drag pipes, or maybe get a 4-1 exhaust, powder coat some stuff. Should be a fun trip.
     I have basic mechanical skills, I can follow instructions very well, everything I have learned has come from internet forums over the last 6 years or so. I have a decnt set of tools, just set up my shop so Im sure ill be filling it up as I go, pictures are below.
    So wish me luck, Im expecting a budget of maybe 2 grand and a timeline of 2 months hopefully, dont want to miss any bit of riding time here in KY.

Great looking bike, and great looking shop!!!

The first thing I would suggest is to take an MSF basic riders course. Awesome course and well worth the price (take it out of your bike budget - it's worth it).

I would say to leave the engine alone for now if it's running great. When you start geting into head work and cams, valves and springs, it's going to eat up your budget amount pretty quick (and without a job, sometimes every penny counts). Just concentrate on the cometics at first. Then as time and money allows, dig into the engine  and make a sleeper* out of it.   ;D

By the way, I wish my shop looked like that. TV, counch, organized work bench... man, I jealous...   :D

* - "Sleeper" Adjective - a moter vechicle that does look like it can kick your a$$, but totally can.  ;D

thanks man haha, i move the couch, it took up too much space. My favorite part is the computer, i have all the shop manuals on it, any questions i have I can research online and of course browse this forum as needed.

Got started today, totally dismantled her. all that's still on the mike are the wheels, motor and suspension. only took about 4 hours total working by myself, it was surprisingly easy. Ill post pics tomorrow, nappy time

Good on you "steel balls" first bike and you make it a CB750!
Lots a luck and that advice on the rider training you would be well advised to take it up, stops the girlfriend from worrying so much too. ;D
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Hey Burnboy.....my k8 project is just starting, making a cafe-style ride and its my first bike also....luckily it didnt start when I bought it, because I didnt even know how to start it!  Luckily a licenced mechanic and I are gunna build it in his garage this winter.  Rocknroll man!

It came apart really quick, scarily quick haha. I've got all bolts labeled and filed away for reassembly. I put each set (fender bolts, handlebar bolts, gauge mounting bolts etc) in a brown paper bag and labeled them all as such, works pretty good so far, brown bags are only like a penny each so should be worth the investment.
A couple of sticking points:
1. How do I remove the engine mounting bolt on the front right? Its the one that my highway bars bolt through, the nut on it cant be gripped because its tucked in between the fins of the motor, special tool?
2. I cant get the main line disconnected from the oil bag, its hard to reach, any tips?

Now I'm taking a nylon disk to some rust spots on the frame and stripping the tank, I think aircraft stripper is going to be the next step. That and tidying up the wiring harness.

I had a hell of a time with those bolts (left and right).  The PO had brush painted the engine with it in the frame which means the nut and threads are all caked with paint.  If this is the case for you.  Maybe some paint stripper on the bolt threads will help release it.

As you can see in the pic, one of the bolt heads broke and Just left the motor mount on the other.

what did you get to fit in there? i cant get anything to fit in there to hold the nut while i turn the bolt out

Actually I haven't extracted them yet.  It was my understanding that the nuts are held in place by the fins on the engine case.  So you should be able to retract the bolt without having to use a tool to hold onto the nut.

The problem in my case was that the PO painted over the nut and threads.

upon closer inspection that 'fin' is cracked and allowing the nut to spin freely, any suggestions? I cant fit a socket in there at all. I think I'm going to have to take a dremel to the head of the bolt. So far its the only major issue Ive come up with. For an almost 33 year old bike Ive been pretty lucky.

It was the one that came with the bike, stocker i believe not sure if it is the right year, as of now its stripped and i put some knee pockets in it, ill post pics soon

Carbs off and being cleaned, I have gone through about 75 qtips so far. Seem to b fine so im not going to take them apart just clean them up, Need to get some new rubber boots for them

Tank mostly stripped. Never really understood or believed in the power of primer before...... but now that i see its sticking power after several coats of aircraft stripper, I BELIEVE!!!! Been working on the knee pockets. Its not too hard at all, well see how even it is after I finally get all of this damned primer off the tank. I used the dead hammer technique and am very happy with the results so far.

after fome convincing i got the motor out of the frame. What are the screws holding the valve cover onmade out of? lead? solder? Ive stripped 2 of the damn things. They dont hold up for crap I had a few of the same material in my civic and ruined them too.

got off the valve cover and the cam. got a question about the highlighted areas. are these the pucks? The green ones are present and the red ones are missing. I assume this Isnt the correct set up? By and by the cam looks perfect and the rockers are perfect. Theres a light brown "coating" on the very top of the valves, is this normal? My brother thinks its the original color of the springs. Zero varnish inside everything looks great.
