Bike is leaking fuel
« on: April 10, 2011, 06:01:33 AM »
I just cleaned the carbs real good with an ultra sonic cleaner and simple green about two or three weeks ago, and it ran great.  Now two weeks later I pulled the bike back out for a ride and noticed it felt sluggish on acceleration .  When I got back home the #1 carb was leaking fuel from the top of the bowl.  Is this a float problem?  I had taken the bowl off and pushed the float up manually and the fuel stopped so I put the bowl back on and still leaking.  thought that the float may have been stuck but I am going to try to remove the float and check it out today, any ideas?

Sounds like a float issue...

I agree. Something is allowing the fuel level to get too  high. Float height wrong, or sticking. Normally, the level of fuel should be below the seam/gasket. Bike model/year might help in any further discussion of this.

When you say top of the bowl do you mean at the gasket? If so then it could be stuck float or wrong float level or trash in float valve. When it was leaking was it on the side stand engine off? Was it running? or was it leaking while driving? Check for any burrs on the two post or the pin or the hinge part of the float. are the floats brass if so see if it floats shake it to see if it has gas in it.

is your tank and fuel supply completely rust and grit free?
even with a good carb cleaning, debris from your tank can Eff up all your hard work.  :o
verify you havent got fuel sediment back in there.
yes, its likely is a float issue, either a stick float valve or a outt of spec float height, but if adjusting the float height to spec does not resolve the leak, you'll need to double check where the leak is starting. I'd go right to the fuel connections between carbs.
