Did I miss something? Oh just an advert for an up-coming event.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Did I miss something? Oh just an advert for an up-coming event.

My intention is to build a replica, if you will, of a bike that my Dad built back in the early 60's. I've got a bit of a head start with mine because the Street Jawas back then came with 16" wheels and he had to modify the swing arm  and forks to allow the 19" wheels he wanted. Mine already had the 19" wheels. His engine was the 1950 Jawa Perak model and had a seperate kick starter & gearshift levers, while mine is actually a mid 60's model with the "combination" gearshift/kickstarter lever in one (it sits in the gearshift position and when you need to start it, you push in on the shaft that the lever is on and raise the lever up and slightly to the rear and now use it to kick start the engine. Then, you let it go forward and it locks back in the "gearshift position")

This may be a bit boring until I can get another printer and get setup so I can post pictures. I apologize for that and will rectify that ASAP.

I really didn't know if I'd ever be able to get the engine going or not AND when I saw that other engine on ebay and they said it was a great running engine, I was hopeful to get it, just gotta arrange to get it home. Dad's Jawa had an early 50's BSA Bantam gas tank (which I don't have) but mine will use a standard tank, unless I run across one more suitable. His exhaust was straight pipes  (tuned by him, using the length that worked the best and with a washer welded on the end. Took a lot of running it, cutting off a 1/2", weld the washer back on and running it again. He did this until performance dropped off and he went back and added a 1/4" back on. Keep in mind that he had TWO pipes to do this to. At this point, I'm not sure what I'm going to use for the exhaust. I have stock pipes and ONE muffler. The factory "Hop-Up" instructions have the plans for Building tuned exhaust pipes (like expansion chambers), but I don't have the skill, time, materials or the equipment to do that. I'll just have to cross that bridge, when I get to it.

Once again, here is the bike I have:

And here is the engine that I managed to pick up on.

Here is a stock 250 Jawa:

And here is a Jawa 250 Motocross of that period. Dad's was kind of in between and painted Metallic Purple!

BTW, for anyone who thinks that I should do a Complete Restoration, there are 2 reasons that I'm not. Number one, I agree that the original bike is pretty sharp, but there are a lot of parts missing that would be extremely hard to find AND be pretty costly, if you COULD find them. Having built a 125 version of this (they look virtually the same, just that the overall dimensions of the 125, are smaller), I know exactly what parts are there and whats not, without much effort. Besides that, the Jawa that my Dad built, was quite a masterpiece. It was a bike that meant alot to him (and me) and he was really proud of what he'd accomplished with that one. That being said, I'll get on with it as I can. :)

The forks were stuck and in bad shape when I got this one, but I was able to pickup some decent ones on ebay some time back. During this process, my plans are to:

       1. Strip the bike down, looking for any surprises as I go and
paying close attention to the swingarm fit.
       2. Most painted surfaces will be painted Gloss Black (can't
afford powdercoat, so I'm open to suggestions on a durable
          type of paint.
       3. Reassemble the frame (considering how much trouble it
would be to try to find a bearing kit to replace those
separate bearings in the steering head and decide if it
would be worth it or not).
       4. Check on some tires with a trials (or knobby) type thread
(have to see just what size will fit the rim AND fit the forks
and in the rear) I'm thinking that about a 3.25 x 19 in the
front (or maybe a 3.50) and a 3.50 in the rear (or maybe a
4.00). I haven;'t bought tires in quite awhile, so I'll just
have to see what is available in the 19" tires (not looking
for an expensive tire, just a decent compromise of low price
           but good tire, you know?
       5. Now, this thing has a generator w/a regulator and it is a
6volt and I don't even know if you can still get a 6 volt
battery or not. One thing I need to do, is to go over to a
place called Jawa Chat and see what I can find out there.
I've been there several times and have been a member for a
spell but, can't beat the old SOHC4. ;)

(I'll be adding onto this later on, I'm dealing with a
"stopped up drain" in my house right now and typing in
between dealing with it and waiting for the stuff I put in
             the drain to work.)

I didn't realise JAWA got to America?
Sad to say we used to cannibalise old Jawas for their front forks as once welded fully out they made great chopper forks.
My mate had one just the same as you are building, he rode it to work every day and apart from some head gasket leakage it never let him down, sold it for $50 when he stopped riding.
There's lots of old Jawa around New Zealand lying in sheds etc as they were the poor mans Triumph.
Good luck with your project.......Hush.

Yeah Hush, I think they'd been over here since early 50's I think. Not positive when they 1st came over. I had never actually heard of them until my Granddad and my Dad bought out a small Dealership in Little Rock. With that buyout, he acquired the BSA, Parilla and the Jawa/CZ/ESO franchises. Only one I'd ever heard of was BSA. ::)  Too bad that there isn't some inexpensive way for me to come there, load up and return home. ::) Sounds like I could have a field day, until it came time to pay the shipping charges. :(  Those old Jawas are pretty solid old bikes alright.

A feature that the Jawa/CZs have, that I really enjoy, is the mechanism on the tight side of the engine (under the right engine cover) that operates the clutch each time you shift gears. That's right, it automatically operates the clutch when you shift gears! ;) I used to open the throttle, back off of the throttle slightly, grab another gear and open it up again and so on. Of course the gearshift/kickstart lever used to foul folks up when they'd be looking for the kick starter. :D

Thanks for that link too, it is always interesting to see what they have in other countries (although it makes me sometimes wish I could get those parts here. ;)

Well, kirkn is going to pick up my engine next week and we'll start plotting how I'm going to get it here. Sure looking forward to getting this thing home and mix it with what I've got! ;D

BTW, I'm going to be modifying the original engine to the same specs that my Dad did and I'll be looking for stones and such, to help me with the porting and polishing (hopefully, moderately priced). If this comes out right, this is going to be a pretty peppy little 250 Jawa.

Gota say that Bill (Ecosse) is trying to help me come up with the exact color of Purple for this build. When we are talking about the motorcycles in his past, that Jawa is the one that he brings up the most and seems to get the most pleasure form when talking motorcycles. This build should really bring him out more. ;) When it's finished, I am going to take some shots of him with and on it. 8)

Well, that engine has made it from the seller, to Kirk 9 (kirkn)(about 2hrs away), to a friend of John's (jtb) and has made it to Birmingham Alabama and is waiting for John and me to get together on the day, time and place to meet in Memphis and THEN the Jawa engine will be making it's way (on the final leg) to Greenwood Arkansas where it will mate up with it's new home in my frame. ;)

You know I'm following this! Partly because of the interesting bike but mostly because of the sentiment driving the project.

Seems like I'm falling behind on a few things. ::) Of course, this one is waiting on John AND me to be able to set a time and place to meet in Memphis and hand the engine off to me and my Dad. I can hardly wait to get that engine, but I'm not going to try to get pushy with John. I've got a pretty tight schedule myself and John may have as well. I'm still astounded that we managed to pick up a "good running engine.  8) ;)  My Dad keeps asking me if we are going to build THAT engine and I keep reminding him the we are going to take the original engine apart and "Build" it to put in the bike, but use the running one to get it on the road sooner. If the "Built" engine runs as expected, we'll see about giving the 2nd engine the same treatment! ;)

Well Folks, I think it was sometime last March that I found a complete & running 250cc Jawa engine on ebay & managed to win the bid on it. Well, as I was contemplating how to get it here to my home, Some of the SOHC4's bunch started trying to work out the details and see what they could come up with. Kirk (kirkn) live not too far away and drove over , picked it up and had it at his place, til he and I decided the best way to get it hwere. John (jtb) just said that IF the engine could be gotten to him in Birmingham, Alabama, he'd bring it and meet me in Memphis to hand it off to me.  Well, I was on  my way to Little Rock, while the crew (Kirk/kirkn, James/Droopy, John/jtb, Jeff fuzzybutt buckykatt) went at it to work it out. So (like I said) Kkirk picked it up. Jeff volunteered to come down from South Carolina to assist in any way he could (wasn't necessary though) a friend of John's went to Florida to Bike Week, picked it up and brought it back to John. ANd after quite a while (through no fault of John's), John and I were able to set it up.

So we arranged to meet at West Memphis on the 8th of Aug. (today), meet at Cracker Barrel, get acquainted, have lunch and after a bit we moved the engine from his car to my van. Then we started back to our respective homes and the 250 Jawa engine is in Greenwood, Arkansas as we speak! 8).

I want to THANK those who were involved (along with those who offered to help) to help get this engine to us and to John, who drove half of the way between Birmingham, Alabama and Greenwood, Arkansas.  ;)

My hat's off to you all!  SOHC4 Forever!!!!!!!!!!! 8) ;)

hello.
It's nice to see people who respect the old chezch bikes . I was really surprised that so far away from Europe people care about those old bikes.
As I live in Latvia ( the former territory of USSR ) for many of decades the trademark Jawa was one of the bounds with free world for us. I had three of them when I was twenty and it was twenty years ago. Now respecting  memories  I have bought and restored one 360 from year 1968 . In spite of the pleasure the modern bikes offer I can confess - riding the jawa is pleasure thankfully the low placement of the engine ( and 16 '' wheels  helps a lot ) and easy steerage.
By the way a lot of technical information You can find on Jawaold.com. They have scanned users manuals and repairing manuals for old Jawa bikes but they are in Russian.
If You need a help it would be pleasure for me try to help and translate some of them.
Here I add photo of my Jawa.
Wishing success in restoring Your bike,
Ivars Jakobsons

So how far, in miles, did the engine travel in the Great SOHC4 Relay Race ?

Now I'm wondering if it'd be possible to transport a part from coast to coast this way. It'd have to be something really trivial like a tire valve cap to make it completely pointless.
