Quite few guys I know travel Romania every Summer - or Ukraina. There is life East of you, Wobbly

I have been with Berlin Brigade until 89, and I am probably the last of the "Cold War Warriors" in that city. Nowhere else would you understand the Cold War better than in West Berlin. Although really stationed in K-Town, I am currently mostly in Berlin for yet another year. Believe it or not: I have a small apartment there, but I never even go to East Berlin. When I go back and forth between K-Town and Berlin, I take the old route using Allied Checkpoint Bravo and Alpha. When I am at Ramstein Air Base (I live in a large house nearby with compliments of the U.S. Army), I still feel funny when I see uniforms from countries that used to be members of the Warsaw Pact. A year or two ago, I was brave enough to venture with my BMW into Slovenia (all these new countries that didn't exist back in my day) to drive some passes. The first thing I saw going up the pass was a Russian T-34. A memorial, apparently. So I made it unmolested back to Italy.
I definitely wouldn't go to Ukraine--as my opinion about that country and its government, is not the highest. I have not forgotten that we fought the Nazis side-by-side with the Russians, and so I don't care about fascist militias roaming the country. Sometimes, just because one side is no good, doesn't make the other side the good guys. Nor do I understand what all these new member countries (thanks God not Ukraine yet) have to do with the North Atlantic--perhaps NATO should find a new name. As far as Romania goes, I have met a lot of nice people working in Italy who are from Romania. However, that entire villages are depopulated in that country because they all moved to Berlin, makes one wonder if Romania is governed the way it should be. I think not. And that's also what I hear from Romanian women married to Americans.
The route that Mihai took, is on my wish list though. And, if he will keep me company, I am sure that it would be both interesting and pleasant. But before that, I hope to make a trip with him to David Silver in the U.K. He doesn't know it yet, but if we do, the motorcycle museum in Birmingham is also on the "to-do list."
Sorry for drifting off--but you comment holds more in it for me that you could have imagined. For the longest time, anything east of Berlin, simply didn't exist for me. I never even made it to Poland--only a short drive away.
