Skyline Drive, The Blue Ridge Parkway,  and Cherohala Highway are all great car or motorcycle roads you should experience once if not more often in your life. Mind your speed as they enforce the speed limit on them.

Once just after dusk while there was still some light to see had a bobcat cross in front of me about 150 feet ahead of me. It was across quicker than a deer, had them cross as well…they often graze on the sides of the roadway and in any fields adjacent, not too fearful as they aren’t hunted there and they know it… areas outside the range of a rifle and land adjacent to the parkways they are hunted in many of those areas.

I lived in TN, Appalachian mountains, growing up and in western NC mountains after college before 19 years in central Ohio and the humid hell of it in summer and snow and cold of winter…not a fan of Ohio. I like AZ and the desert, even the 102-103 we will have tomorrow afternoon…

My 70 750 once took a short ride in the back of the boss’s 69 El Camino. I was a beginning rider returning from lunch and dumped it when, darn it, my passenger didn’t want to lean on the curve. We met the curb, broken clutch lever, bent bars. Yeah it was all his fault (not!). A couple after hours in the shop and lots of help from Salami (Bobby) and Weirdo (Dan) made it right again and I learned a lesson too.

Hey Kevin...I think nearly all of us had one of those moments early in our riding years.  I remember side swiping another biker on the entrance to a trail on my new-to-me Suzuki 250.  Minor damage, bent shift lever and hurt my foot, but my Dad was mad, the Suzi was off limits for a week and I was back to riding my Allstate moped!

It came to be known as the 1000 mile wipeout: after a month of riding you can now operate the controls smoothly and probably you’re overconfident when you should be conservative.

The pictured ElCamino above is Ofreens find,  my boss’s ElCamino was a 69 307 dark green with vinyl top. He got that car precisely for moving motorcycles. I may have made some dump runs with the Honda crate remains in the ElCamino. The one below is more like the boss’s car, but not an SS396

Thanks Andy.  Much of the front of that building is a false front, in the tradition of old west buildings.  It always looks to me like it would blow over in a stiff breeze due to its narrowness.

I was a beginning rider returning from lunch and dumped it when, darn it, my passenger didn’t want to lean on the curve.

Carrying nervous passengers is where I really leaned the concept of being aware of countersteering way back when.  They can fight the lean all they want, but won't do any good.

Here's a pic of the front of the car.

Nope, just spotted it alongside the road during the ride.  It has the 396 Turbo Jet badge on the fenders, which would be interesting to drive.  My brother had an El Camino with a 327 many years ago.  That was a fun car, but very squirrelly on a wet road.  An El Camino would be fun to have, but I have enough old cars around here.  Here's the for sale info if anyone is interested.

$12K sounds like a fair price, especially if it has a 396 and not very rusty.

I've always liked the El Caminos, my good friend has a '72....

Now there is a concept to bring back!

They never went away in Oz Steve, right up until when Ford and GM stopped manufacturing cars here, we had  “Utilities” or “Utes” for short, based on the current range of sedans, mostly 2 doors (but GM-H did bring out a 4 door variant with mediocre sales due to the tiny back seat and shorter tub) and they were always very popular with tradesmen and farmers etc.

Toyota then introduced the Hilux in both 2WD and 4WD variants followed quickly by Nissan, Mitsubishi and Mazda, and nowadays all you see here are Japanese trucks that seem to get bigger with every model. I love my little Mitsubishi truck with its long tub and excellent fuel economy, but it’s a bit cramped for me because I’m tall so down the road aways I would love to find a nice Ford or Holden (GM-H) “Ute” with a lumpy V8 and a bit more leg room.

They’re gas guzzlers of course, but can be easily converted to run on LPG, which is about half the price of gasoline here. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I see Subaru may be reviving the Brat, might be a good seller.
Seems as though you folks down under have not given in to the bigger is always better thing that we see here.
We need smaller stuff that works well starting with houses!!

The majority of younger Aussies have definitely fallen for the “Bigger is better” BS Steve, I constantly get monstered by huge modern 4WD trucks driven by young guys who owe more money on their trucks than I paid for my house, they think that if they sit on the rear bumper of my $500 Subaru long enough I’ll chicken out and get out of that lane, so depending on which road I’m on (speed cameras or not) I either slow down to piss them off more, or accelerate away from them, as most of those big piles of crap have turbo diesels that take a while to wind up, whereas the Subaru is much nippier.

It also goes much better around corners, so if there are some corners coming up I let them go past, then sit on their bumpers as they wobble and wallow through the bends. The “Brat” was marketed as the “Brumby” (wild horse) here in Oz and were a great little truck but didn’t have a lot of room in the rear tub, which put a lot of people off. ;D
