Thank you Andy for catching my poor spelling. So far over 1000 miles and the bike is running great. On the road seriously again on Monday for the solo portion of my ride through Nevada, Utah, and back home to CA. I love this little 550

It was just shy of 800 miles.  The bike ran excellent- I just got new Hagon shocks and it was great to feel the difference.  I'm dealing with some chain slack issues, but other than that it was very reliable on both highways and back roads.

The bike uses oil too, but until I rebuild the top end this winter, i'm pretty much carrying a spare and quart topping it off every day.  Minimal external seepage from the cam tower pucks, and I suspect the valve seals leak a bit.  No heavy smoke in the exhaust, but the oil has to be going somewhere...?

Not really- it's kind of strange.  Nothing on the swingarm, and a thin film underneath, but no spotting under the bike when parked.  Sometimes i'll get a drip off the fins in front, but that's the pucks...

You say you 'carry a quart' to top it off each day. Just how much would you say you have to add each time you top it off?

I think I add a quart every 300-400 miles?  I went through 2 over the 800 mile trip.  I check the oil every time I fuel, right after shutting the bike off, and top off if the level reads low.  At worst, it may be 1/8 to 1/4 down.  Sometime not at all.

I have an oil pressure gauge, which also reads predictably, about 10psi per 1k rpms at operating temp.

I'm planning to go through the top end this winter and replace all of the seals.  Like I said, the engine isn't wet or blowing oil all over me, just a little seeping in the front below the pucks, and a thin film on the bottom.  My exhaust will occasionally have a tiny puff of blue smoke at acceleration, but nothing else to suggest it's burning a bunch of oil.

It's somewhat of a mystery to me, but it seems predictable enough and the bike runs well, so I'm just babying it through this riding season.

To me, that is a fair amount of oil loss. Like you said, it's a bit of mystery as to where the loss is occurring. One would think it would be detectable in some way.  :-\

By the way, I enjoyed your state last weekend.  There are some nice roads once you get off the xway!  I rode from Jackson to Fenton right after taking that picture.

That is a GREAT picture Beards! The color is popping. Throw that in the thread for the SOHC4 calendar.
