Ahhhhhh........the old strap the Kerker to the shock mount trick! Were you one of those guys that went out like everyone else and bought a 4to1? I didn't get my first big 4 till around 79'-80' and it was a 74 kawi 900z1. I knew the 2 previous owners before I got it. My friend Harley got it first and it had this bad a$$ 4to 1 that he ran without a baffle. My other friend Robin got it and layed it down taking out the pipe and some other goodies. This bike came from Harley's older brother who was a seargent on the San Jose, Ca. pd. He had some exotic cars over the years also but that was the only bike I knew of. Harley got it around 77-78 so it was when you didn't see too many crotch rocket looking bikes. This thing had custom rearsets, clip ons, the cool 4to1, bullet fairing.........something you didn't see on the street. After Robin laid it down and took out the pipe and the right rear set....I got it. I didn't like the rear set/ clip on thing so I traded a guy for everything stock for all the lay down sh!t. I got new bars, stock length cables, footpegs,brake,shifter..........everything it needed so I got it back to stock form. I never saw that bike with stock 4 pipes. When I got it I put on Jardine 4to2's. I didn;t like the sound or looks of those (too trumpety looking!). After that bike I got a 77 LTD 1000 that had....................of all things the same crappy Jardines that were on the 900!! That didn't last long though because I had come into some cash and went out and bought a Kerker brand new (when they were affordable....around $350 in late 80's).I don't remember where that one mounted but I know it wasn't on the shock.
Anyways....I was just gonna say are you one that threw away the stockers and put on the 4to1 or did you put the stockers up in the rafters for later? I know people that did both!!! I would be pissed if I found out I threw away $1K or so of pipes.

Actually no, I bought the bike with chrome headers, not sure what brand but they looked like a pretzel. Kerkers were very popular at that time, they were black, I painted them white.
I remember seeing a Dunstall Norton Commando with a red head, so thats the deal with that. I had '70 Commnado before this bike, I had to look for things to do on the Honda, not so with the Norton, the problems found me. Still wish I had it.

I never saw either of my Z bikes with stock exhaust but my K5 750 had em on there when I got it in 2000. The left 2 mufflers were blown out though and the po had tried to bandage it with some sheet metal & clamps.

Ahhh if we only knew then what we know now,
would have bought up all the shock pipes, and maybe invested in Microsoft. Either way I'd be rich, hahahah

All SOHCers from the Boston area returned today after their 2.5 day, 800 miles round-trip to the Adirondacks. All bikes made it back :)

Crossing the Lake Champlain Bridge today back into VT from NY

Some of the bikes last night at the cabin in Wilmington after a long days ride - my orange CB750K4

Peters K1

Alex (Cabrala) having a nap  8)

It was barely warm enough to have an outdoor dinner but we persevered!

Breakfast in Keene, NY

Anders K8 - dont let appearances deceive - this was the fast bike!

Alex (Cabrala) F1

Hanging around in Lake Placid

Empty mountain roads

They make things big in the Adirondacks

A lot of nice scenery

On the road

cheers
Andy

Did you not hear? The whole exciting, heartbreaking saga:
http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=132256.0

I will say that the winning team put in almost 1,700 miles on a CM400. And, as it turns out, the '76 XL250 was a one-year-only motor - with the exhaust being on the other side & carb sticking out the right side on the earlier models; there was no '77 model stateside; and in '78 they changed to the 2-1 exhaust. If we can find a head in decent shape, we'll probably get it and bore out the cylinder & install an oversize piston. Another option is to have needle bearings installed in the head. Both options are expensive & time-consuming for a bike that really, none of us want. May part it out in the end.. we'll see.

Yeah I followed pretty closely and knew you guys never really left the finish line. Just never heard if you guys kept on the bike afterwards. Bummer about the compatibility and lack of spare parts.
