Going today to buy the mystery bike - 1970 cb750
« on: January 14, 2009, 04:34:49 AM »
A guy I ran into at our headquarters will sell me a 1970 750 for $500. He said it is complete but hasn't run in 20 years and has a title (the most important thing to me since Florida is strict with that stuff). I'm building a 77 550 from the ground up (you may be following my shop thread) that I bought in Sept., so I know that spending the cash on the 750 will slow down my ability to finish the 550. But I've always wanted a 750. The seller lives almost three hours away, so its not like I can stop by to look at it, but I have a feeling it is probably worth the price. He said he's been cleaning it and it looks decent. Any thoughts?

I'll take it...  If it's all there and hasn't been stored outside this whole time etc... etc...

See if he can get you some pics...
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

Sounds like a great deal to me...a 1970 CB750 is becoming a rare thing...and the engine...vrooooom! For $500 hard to go wrong unless its been wrecked or chopped.

cheers
Andy

Buy-Buy -Buy unless its a total wreck.Getting hard to find the earlier ones for sure. Wonder if the title says 70 or the build date on the frame?? may be a K1. You will be able to tell by the sidecovers etc. Hopefully you can post some pics here if you get some.

What do I look for on the sidecovers to tell if it is a K1? I'm only familiar with 550s...

I have a 1970 K0. Best bike I have ever owned. I bought this bike in High School in 75. Damn am I glad I still have her. I dont think you would regret getting the K0. However money is always an issue. Think of it as an investment. I think it will pay in the long run. Just make sure he has a clear title or get a bill of sale. Good luck!

Thanks, folks. I have MLK day off. If the funds are available, I may go up there on Monday and snatch it up if he is home that day. The owner is taking pictures this weekend for me.

If it's a K0 and in good condition, you could get 5000 bucks for it with little trouble. Buy it! ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

There's a 70 750 for sale in twin cities (basket case I think, on CL) for $700. Talked to the guy today and nearly pulled the trigger but I decided to wait. Somebody else can jump on it...

I would go there and back after work, on a weeknight(but need a truck)

Serious the longer you wait the more chance he figures out its worth more or sells to some one who reacts quicker.

There are a lot of things 500 bux will buy that will never give you the return  the bike will..

I'm going to see if he will be at home a week from Sunday. I figure to turn it into a day trip with the wife - take her to lunch, let her shop, see historic sights - and grab the bike on the way home.
Thanks for the comments. I used them to show the wife what a good idea this purchase is.

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!

If you're not gonna collect it for a week or so, give him the money in advance. Just tell him that you've talked to your wife and you want to upgrade to a 750 for longer trips, so want to secure it.

Even if it's a dog, you'll get your money back plus interest (remember interest?) if you part it on EBay. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Well done! I hope it's another of those low mileage, pristine "Barn Finds" that seem to pop up all the time in the US, but even if it's not, for 500 bucks you can't go wrong! Cheers, Terry. ;D

I leave in an hour with the Honda Odyssey for the trip to St. Augustine to stuff a 1970 750 in the back (my 550 fit in there when I bought it in Sept., 750 better fit). I have not seen a photo and don't even know what color it is, but I am basing this purchase on the feedback from you folks, so wish me luck!
