While taking a break from the 550, I was playing around with the KO and noticed under the bottom side of the gas tank that it was originally the cool gold color they offered at that time. I am stoked. I like that color. Now if I can figure out how to match it....

Keep in mind the KO had matching fork ears and headlight bucket too.  I think Honda did a real nice job carrying the color scheme from the side covers all the way to the bucket.  From 72 on is where they went with chrome fork ears and black bucket.  Sounds like on your KO the guy either painted those items or replaced them with newer units.  Can't wait to see the pics.  I paid $450 for my KO in 2007 and it had sat for 17 years at the time.  You will rue the day that you are ridin' down the road on it.  I also love the gold and that is what I am now looking for a 1971 gold.  The thing you will have the most fun with is doing the sync on the carbs of the KO if it has the OEM 4 cable system.  There is also a chance the previous owner changed the carbs out to new units too.  Loads of fun awaiting you...keep us posted.

The previous owner had taken the carbs off to clean them and organized the parts nicely. There is a strange cable with four cables coming out one side of it, so I guess that is the part I keep hearing about...

Yup, that would be the throttle cable with the junction that splits into four. Not hard to sync, but hard to keep them that way relative to later carb set-ups.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Yah, don't let the 4 carb cable system scare you.  I did at first but it is OK to deal with.  The pain is you have to sync first at around 3,000 RPM and then you also have to sync the low idle with the knobs on the sides of all 4 carbs.  The secret is to get a nice reliable 4 meter sync gauge set up.  And as the guys here always say, sync is the VERY last thing you do once you have the valves, points, timing and everything else set up.

This sounds like it will be interesting!

From what I've read on the Q and A, there are no color codes prior to 1982 available. Any suggestions for figuring out the shade of gold needed. I know an auto body guy who does a nice job at good rates. He painted my last 550 gloss black for $80. I realize the gold may be more work, etc., etc.

But maybe someone with a similar gold K0 can offer suggestions?

You can go to dondirtbiker.com  This guy has done a lot of research to match the OEM colors and an entire candy kit is around $125 last I looked.  If your body guy does not mind you bringing in the paint you could consider that route.

Hey egar here is another link for you to ponder as far as original Honda paint. Some of those colors have a seperate base color and then a candy type of clearer coats over that to  build up the color. Not rattlecan stuff by any means but well worth what it takes to get it right. As you go on your project just tell yourself it will take time(and money) and slowly start to search and gather your goodies, know when to buy that certain thing, and someday it will be done.http://www.motorcycleproject.com/motorcycle/text/lubrtech.html

Thanks for the help guys.

I have today off thanks to MLK and my wife is working a 12-hour shift, so you know where I will be all day - with my three babies in the garage. I'm going to focus on the 550 before I start messing with the KO. That sounds so lovely to say, KO. I can't believe I have one, even if it is rough. If I don't get the camera from work today, I will bring it home tomorrow and post lots of pix.
Terry, I will hit everything with lube like you said. At least the bike is away from the coastal air.
Johnie, I will check out the site and bookmark it in my Honda folder.
OldTimer, Thanks. I remember when I first came on board in 2005 and didn't know sh#t from shinola about these bikes. I hope the 550s have helped me prepare for the KO. I love to say that. KO.
He says he is gonna focus on the 550 before he starts messin' with the KO (he loves to say that....KO!!!!)

I believe the KO is next to the sandcast in terms of rarity/desirability.

Thanks for the paint links. That was a big concern. I want to do this bike right and not cafe it like I'm doing to the 550. I love that candy gold color. It is so 70s. My uncle had a blue-green one in 1970 when I was five and I always wanted one. He gave my dad a ride on the back...scared the hell out of him at 100 mph.. and gave him pneumonia because it was a cold day in NH when they took that ride. I'll never forget it.

Ask Magpie to post some bigger pics of his aviator. Has at least a couple of beautiful K0's in red and saw a pic of a blue one he was taking on.Really knows his way around these bikes.

Congrats on picking up the K0! I was lucky enough to find a K1 in Candy Gold in AWESOME condition! I would say that the paint is about an 8.75/10!

I'm at work and just confirmed with the prior owner (who also works for the same agency) that the bike was originally candy gold in color. He is sending down the notarized title to me this week and the three keys he forgot to give me.

I will grab my work camera as promised and post pictures when I get home. I will also shoot photos of the 550 and post them in the shop site thread that is already started.

Edgar...not sure if you are painting this candy yourself or not, but I wanted to warn you painting candy is not an easy task and some good body guys can not even do it.  It does take some skill.  So before you bring your candy gold products to a painter, ask around and see if there is someone that knows how to paint this stuff.  I found a guy here in WI that used to do it a lot and I am very happy with how he did my KO ruby red.  He did such a nice job I had to pry his hands off my tank when I came to pick it up...  :)

I have a guy who restores old cars who could do the painting. He did my first 550.

Nice find for you edgar.  It does not look like the original air box there.  My KO and the others I have seen do not have the ridges on them.  There is a pic below of what mine came with.  Easy enough to find another air box if you are going stock.  But I bet that one will work just as well.  Looking forward to watching you build this one.  Best of luck with it.  Nice to see another KO saved from the pile.
